I personally understand this journey because I had a stroke on May 21, 2018, and I’m coming up on my eight-year anniversary. I’ll be sharing my story — how my stroke started, what I went through, and how I fought to regain my speech and strength.

1. Someone says: “I don’t want to be here anymore.”
They’re upset, maybe crying, but not actively harming themselves.
👉🏾Call 988
They’ll talk you (or them) through it and help de-escalate.
2. Someone has a plan to hurt themselves and access to means (pills, weapon, etc.)
👉🏾Start with 988, but this may quickly become 911 if there’s immediate danger
988 can guide you in real time and help decide if emergency services are needed.
3. Someone is actively trying to harm themselves (overdosing, cutting, about to jump)
👉🏾Call 911 immediately
This is a life-threatening emergency.
4. Person is having a panic attack or severe anxiety episode
👉🏾Call 988
They specialize in calming and grounding people without escalating the situation.
5. Someone is intoxicated, emotional, and talking irrationally but not violent
👉🏾Call 988
They can help de-escalate and connect to support.
6. Someone is having a mental health crisis AND becoming physically aggressive (throwing things, threatening others)
👉🏾Call 911
Now there’s immediate risk to others.
7. You’re overwhelmed, stressed, or just need someone to talk to
👉🏾Call or text 988
You don’t have to be suicidal—they’ll still help. Simple rule of thumb:
Emotional crisis → 988
Immediate physical danger → 911
