International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons

International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons Present new, innovative and, often unpublished material and techniques or modifications in the field of Perio Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. P.D.

Over 30 years ago, Dr. Peter Nordland reached out to Dr. Preston Miller and suggested they meet to discuss similarities in root coverage surgery which up to that time had been considered impossible or at best unpredictable. They met during the American Academy of Periodontology’s Annual Meeting and shared differences and similarities in the procedures they were performing. Miller introduced Dr. Pat Allen to Dr. Nordland and they all decided to meet and share ideas about root coverage grafting. The meeting was so productive that they felt it would be a good idea to create a study group focused on regenerative surgery. They then invited some of the most talented and inquisitive clinicians of the time to also contribute. Little did they realize that the pendulum of periodontal surgical procedures was about to take a big swing into the regenerative and reconstructive direction. The interest and focus of the organization expanded as international surgeons and educators expressed an interest in participating. Over time, what had been known as the periodontal plastic surgery study club evolved into the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons (ISPPS), and invitations to attend the annual meeting were offered to surgeon-educators interested in oral plastic surgery. Today, the International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons is composed of dental specialists throughout the world, most of whom are full-time clinicians and educators. The society meets annually the day before the AAP annual meeting to present new, innovative and, often unpublished material and techniques or modifications to existing techniques in the field of periodontal plastic and reconstructive surgery, aimed at improving overall esthetics to the benefit of patients long-term.

REPOST
Is the socket shield technique fading… or evolving?

In this clip from the gIDE Unlocked Podcast, Dr. Sascha Jovanovic and Dr. Joseph Kan break down the maturation of socket shield therapy — and why it’s no longer about hype, but case selection, long-term outcomes, and esthetic precision.

After 15+ years of clinical experience, the conversation shifts from trends to truth:
✔ When socket shield really adds value
✔ Facial vs interproximal considerations
✔ Papilla preservation in inter-implant esthetics
✔ Where bone grafting and tissue grafting still win

This is what progress looks like.

The inaugural issue of the ISPPS EDGE highlights a pivotal shift in periodontal therapy, one grounded in precision, preservation, and better patient experiences.

In her feature, Karen Aguilar brings forward compelling clinical evidence (Ho et al., 2024) demonstrating that endoscopy-assisted therapy can achieve outcomes comparable to traditional surgical approaches while reducing trauma, shortening treatment time, and supporting improved healing.

This isn’t about replacing one technique with another. It’s about expanding how clinicians think.

With visualization-driven care, what was once treated blindly can now be approached with clarity:
• Greater accuracy in debridement
• Enhanced detection of root and restorative issues
• Preservation of soft tissue integrity

Through its Platinum Partnership with ISPPS, PerioView supports a shared commitment to advancing science-backed, minimally invasive care, where innovation serves both clinician and patient.

Because when clinicians can see more, they can treat more effectively, often with less trauma.
