πŸ”Ή Most people who have ADHD are very sensitive to what other people think or say about them.

πŸ”Ή This is sometimes called rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD), which is not a medical diagnosis, but a way of describing this cluster of emotional symptoms that are associated with ADHD.

πŸ”Ή The ADHD nervous system overreacts to things from the outside world. Any sense of rejection can set off the stress response and cause an emotional reaction that's much more extreme than usual.

πŸ”Ή One way to help kids deal with rejection sensitivity is to incorporate calm-down skills as a regular practice into the daily family routine.

πŸ”Ή Learning and practicing skills when they are NOT STRESSED is what lays the groundwork for eventually having the skills to use when they are stressed.

πŸ”Ή How does your family practice calm-down skills??

‑ Punishing a child with ADHD for difficult behaviors is ineffective and counterproductive because they don’t have the ability to regulate their emotions and behaviors like a neurotypical child would.

‑ Kids with ADHD are overly sensitive to parents' anger, which means that they may not hear what you are saying about their misbehavior and instead, they are internalizing the message that they are bad πŸ˜”β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

‑ Adding a punishment results in them feeling excessively guilty and ashamed for what they couldn’t control πŸ˜”β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

‑ Over time, the guilt and shame turn into frustration, defiance, and emotional outbursts all of which make behavior worse πŸ˜”β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

‑ Instead of punishing, a better approach is to impose consequences that are appropriate to the offense and respectful of your child πŸ’«β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

➀ Consequences that involve undoing or redoing the situation are ideal πŸ‘ πŸ‘β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

‑Here are some examples:
✨ The consequence for carelessly spilling milk might be that your child cleans up the mess (undoing), and then pours another glass and sets it in a safer place (redoing).

✨ The consequence for hitting your sister in anger might be to calm yourself down (undoing) and then apologize for hitting (redoing).

➀ Remember that you can set the stage for success by structuring the environment to prevent unwanted behaviors

✨Steer your child toward positive behaviors by establishing clear rules and routines and using visual cues such as lists and creative reminders to prompt your child toward desired behaviors. Add frequent positive feedback, rewards, and other incentives to increase motivation toward target behaviors βœ¨β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

Do you know people who seem to believe that ADHD is an excuse for bad behavior?

They might offer you unsolicited parenting advice, and think that behavior can be corrected by trying harder or with discipline πŸ˜£β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

ADHD is an EXPLANATION, not an excuse.

Just about every mainstream medical, psychological, and educational organization in the U.S. long ago concluded that ADHD is real and that children and adults with attention deficit disorder benefit from appropriate treatment. ADHD is scientifically documented it's not debatable.

Here’s what the science says:

🧠 ADHD is a neurodevelopmental delay wherein the brain’s frontal lobe develops about 3 years behind the rest of the brain.

🧠 The frontal lobe is where attention, emotions, and behavioral control intersect. This is the self-control center of the brain.

Here's what you can do:
➊ Explain that your kid’s behaviors are the result of the brain’s development and not because they are spoiled or bratty or morally deficient.

βž‹ Explain that no amount of discipline or punishment is going to speed up your kid’s brain development.

➌ Explain how it’s hard enough for parents to remember this all the time so you know it must be hard for other people to understand too.

➍ Explain how you would appreciate their support even though it’s hard to remember these facts when you don’t live with ADHD.

➑️ When you’re aware of the motive behind your choices you’re LEADING rather than REACTING.
➑️ When you understand how emotional intensity affects learning & you can WAIT out the storm to teach.

✨ When you’re aware of the motive behind your choices you are LEADING rather than REACTING πŸ‘β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹
✨ Sometimes it's wiser to save your time and effort for the things that REALLY matter than to fight about every problem πŸ˜‰βœ¨ Defining your parenting values helps you know when to say yes and when to say no; when to enforce a firm limit and when to let it go.

Feelings are like waves on the beach. πŸ–οΈβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹
Constantly moving in and out. Some waves are bigger and some are smaller, no matter the size they never stand still. πŸŒŠβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹
Managing strong emotions begins with recognizing that no matter how intense they may feel, feelings are always temporary. They swell up and then recede. We can’t hold onto good feelings in the very same way that we can’t hold onto bad feelings but we can learn to recognize the rise and fall of the wave.πŸ„β€β™‚οΈβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

✦ It’s important for parents to learn accurate information about ADHD medications. Medication is a first-line treatment option because it works for about 80 percent of people with ADHD.

✦ Medication levels the neurobiological playing field which in turn reduces the amount of effort kids need to spend to get through the day. It's a lot like how wearing glasses to see better reduces the effort it takes to see.

✦ It can have a profound effect on being able to learn and develop the skills kids need to succeed.

✦ Medication can help kids to get more out of non-medication treatments such as therapy and school supports.

✦ To get the most out of medication, carefully observe the effects and communicate this information to the prescribing doctor. This will help them to know how to adjust dosage to find the right balance between the positive effects of the medication with minimal side effects.

✧ There’s really nothing worse than seeing your kid confront difficulties and not knowing how to help them πŸ˜£β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

✧ So often, the things that work for helping other kids simply don’t work for our kids. That’s because brains with ADHD are different.

✧ Knowing about the differences is key to understanding and successfully treating the most common symptoms and behavior patterns.

✧ Brains with ADHD have differences in
βž€ Brain structure
➁ Brain function
βž‚ Brain development

✧ These differences relate to brain size, neurotransmitters, and brain networks. There are areas of the brain that mature more slowly or have different activity levels than a neurotypical brain.

✧ Learning about the biological differences in brains with ADHD can help everyone on your parenting team to understand your child better πŸ§‘β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

The most effective treatment for ADHD is a combination of strategies that work together to reduce symptoms and build skills.

✦ Parent education and training in behavior management have been found to be as effective as medication in reducing symptoms.
✦ Stimulant medications have been found to be effective for 80-85% of people with ADHD.
✦ Stimulant medications work by making dopamine more available in the brain. Doctors call it β€œnormalizing dopamine function” it’s the same thing as wearing glasses if your eyes don’t see well.
✦There are only two kinds of stimulants one is called methylphenidate and the other is amphetamine. Most people respond better to one or the other but the only way to know which one is better for your kid is to try both.
✦ The school is a necessary part of the treatment plan.
✦Academic accommodation for ADHD symptoms is appropriate and beneficial even when grades are good.

Did you know that ADHD directly affects virtually all aspects of communication?

Here are the symptoms straight from the diagnostic criteria
➺ Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
➺ Often blurts out answers
➺ Often talks excessively
➺ Often interrupts or intrudes on others

Communication problems result in misunderstandings, reactivity, conflict and increased stress at home, and problems in school πŸ˜žβ€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹

A positive parent-child relationship can reduce conflict and facilitate open, respectful communication.

β™₯️ Show interest in your child’s interests and look for easy, joyful experiences with them.
β™₯️ Be present and listen intently when your child speaks to you. (That means phones away.)
β™₯️ Normalize communication repair. ADHD or not, everyone makes mistakes. Communication repair grants you and your child the space to acknowledge mistakes, apologize when things go off the rails, and make amends – all of which are important to fostering healthy communication.

β™₯️

In the words of Jim Rohn, one of the greatest gifts you can give to anyone is the gift of attention.
