Letโs talk about Medical Anxiety... itโs real, and you arenโt alone. ๐ฉบ๐ผ๐ฉน
Have you ever felt your heart race or your mind go blank the second you walk into a doctor's office? That isn't just "nerves."
Medical anxiety is often your nervous system remembering. ๐ง ๐ญ Itโs your body recalling past experiences where you felt dismissed, rushed, confused, or just not fully heard. When those memories get triggered, your body shifts into protection mode, preparing for the worst-case scenario to keep you safe. ๐ก๏ธ๐
If you have a consult or procedure coming up, here are 3 simple ways to help signal "safety" to your nervous system:
1๏ธโฃ The "Safety Breath": ๐ฌ๏ธ Before you even enter the building, try a few rounds of slow inhales followed by even longer exhales. This tells your brain that you are safe in this moment.
2๏ธโฃ Externalize Your Brain: ๐ Don't rely on your memory! Stress makes it hard to recall details. Write down your symptoms, questions, and concerns beforehand so your brain doesnโt have to "hold" everything while you're under pressure.
3๏ธโฃ The 3-2-1 Grounding Technique: ๐ณ Stay in the present by noticing 3 things you see, 2 things you can touch, and 1 thing you can hear. This pulls you out of the "what-ifs" and back into the "right now."
At The Functional Difference, we believe your voice is the most important part of the conversation. ๐ค You deserve to be heard, and your nervous system deserves to feel safe. ๐๏ธโจ
