Unexpected – that’s what injuries usually are.

If you ever find yourself injured and on the way to walk-in care or waiting overnight before seeing a provider, the RICE method is what you can do right away to help relieve pain, limit swelling and speed up healing.

Children who have gone through intense trauma, like abuse or the loss of a loved one, benefit greatly from having safe spaces to play, create and relax in.

Thanks to a gift from Panda Cares, the charity affiliated with Panda Express, through the Sanford Health Foundation, a new safe space with art supplies, toys and more was opened at the Sanford Traumatic Stress Treatment Center and the Sanford Children's CARE Clinic. This room gives children in the Fargo region a place where they can feel comfortable, helping them heal and recover.

A donation of more than $200,000 helped create the Panda Cares Center for Hope inside Sanford Fargo's Traumatic Stress Treatment Center.

In places like Mountain Lake, Minnesota, health care providers try to go the extra mile to support the children of their community, and sometimes all that takes is a good book.

Watch how Susan Goodemote, a nurse practitioner, is doing more to care for local children during their well child visits:

Sue Goodemote, NP, brought the Reach Out and Read program to three Sanford Health clinics. Now every child 0-5 leaves with a new book.

"My parents were told multiple times that I wouldn't survive. I was baptized in the hospital. They never thought I was coming home. Deb was part of that care that made sure that I got to come home and then someday have three babies of my own."

Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Deb Koens cared for Josie Folden during her first days of life in 1995. Twenty-eight years later, at the end of 2023, she cared for Josie's third child, Luci, in the same NICU.

"To be able to know that I was fortunate to be able to care for both of them, it kind of makes you feel like this has been a long, successful career," said Koens.

Following nine miscarriages, the Folden family welcomes their third baby and an unexpected reunion in the Sanford USD Medical Center's NICU.

The Minnesota Department of Health has designated Sanford Luverne Medical Center as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and one of the leading causes of disability, and outcomes improve for patients when they can get to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible.

Pictured here are (from left) Sanford Luverne RNs Julia Holm, Andrea Sparks, nursing supervisor Krista Kempema, Hannah Gonnerman and Brooklynn Moss.

It is important for everyone to call 9-1-1 at the first sign of a stroke. Local Emergency Medical Service providers are trained to recognize stroke symptoms and will ensure patients are taken to the closest designated stroke center quickly.

Luverne students made a $100 donation to Sanford Luverne after raising money for charities through a business class taught by Katie Kopp. Lucas Brockberg and Alexander Booe made and sold snow globes as a part of the Luverne High School Business class' Christmas Market. We’re so thankful they decided to donate proceeds to Sanford Luverne.

The Christmas Market is an event the Luverne business class hosts to use their knowledge and skills of entrepreneurship and general business. Students developed and produced a product that could be sold at the Christmas Market. The school and community were invited to shop the students’ markets. All profits raised from the market are donated to a local charity or school activity or organization.

Sanford Luverne Medical Center RN Jamie Reisdorfer (right) along with Stacy Gangestad (center) spearheaded a grant application that will help women experiencing pregnancy loss.

Sanford Luverne received a grant from the Women’s Giving Circle so healthcare providers can gift a “grieving box” to show support, and help women through feelings of sadness, numbness, shock, confusion and loneliness after pregnancy loss. About 10-20 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage in the first trimester, sometimes before a pregnancy is even announced. Many times it’s a loss that women share with a limited number of people, which includes their primary physician. The Sanford Luverne healthcare team will now have this extra tool to express support.

Shown with Reisdorfer and Gangestad is Savannah Dinger.

With pickleball being the fastest growing sport in America for three straight years, injuries in the sport are also increasing. Physical therapy student Adam Holmstrom presented stretching and strengthening techniques to Luverne, Minnesota, pickleball players Monday.

Holmstrom said, “This will help reduce your risk of injury and also make you a better player.” He worked under the direction of Jobi Colwell, clinical instructor and physical therapist at Sanford Luverne Medical Center.

The average age of pickeball players nationally is 38, but many players participate into their 80s. The sport involves repetitive, quick movements like lunges, pivots or steps in multiple directions that can cause lower back pain or knee, hip or shoulder injuries.

Shown doing hip flexor stretch, Adam (left) Jobi (right), pickleball players shown are Pat Scheidt and Don Bosshart, Luverne.
