Black History and Healthcare Advocacy

As we close out Black History Month, we honor the advocates, physicians, nurses and community leaders who fought for equitable healthcare access.

Healthcare disparities continue to affect communities of color, particularly in serious illness and end of life care. Studies from the Kaiser Family Foundation show that Black and Hispanic adults are less likely to have advance directives completed compared with white adults, often due to systemic mistrust and inequitable access.

Education and culturally competent support matter.

Guiding Sol Doula Services is committed to inclusive, respectful guidance that centers lived experience and informed choice.

Equity in healthcare includes dignity at the end of life.

Why Conversations About Death Matter

We plan weddings. We plan retirements. We plan vacations.

Yet we avoid planning for the one experience every human will face.

Research published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine shows that individuals who engage in end of life discussions experience care more aligned with their values and report greater peace near the end of life. Families also report lower levels of anxiety and complicated grief.

Talking about death does not make it arrive sooner. It makes it less chaotic when it does.

Caregiver Support

Caregiving is an act of love. It is also labor.

More than 53 million Americans serve as unpaid caregivers, according to AARP. Many balance careers, parenting and personal health challenges while supporting someone with serious illness.

Caregivers experience higher rates of burnout, depression and chronic stress. Yet many feel they must carry the weight alone.

You do not have to.

A doula provides nonmedical emotional, practical and educational support for both the individual and their caregivers. Holding space matters. So does respite. So does being seen.

If you are caring for someone and feel overwhelmed, reach out. Support is not weakness. It is wisdom.
