A friendly reminder to eat your vegetables!

Vegetables are more than just good vitamins in our diet, they actually feed our brains!

Research has found that people who ate 1-2 servings of leafy vegetables a day had cognitive ability to someone 11 years younger.

If that's not a reason to eat more greens, we don't know what is.

Here's something you probably don't know:

People who sit for hours and hours who stay sedentary for more than 12.5 hours a day have the HIGHEST RISK FOR DEATH, says a new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The Columbia University Medical Center studied 8,000 people (all 45 or older) and found 77% of their waking hours sitting or being otherwise inactive-the equivalent of being sedentary more than 12 hours out of a 16-hour waking day, according to Today.com.

Sitting for long hours coupled with inactivity patterns indicated a higher risk for death. However, taking a break every 30 minutes and moving (as vigorously as possible) really helps!

SOLUTIONS: Set an alarm (phone, fitness gadget, etc.) to alert you every 30 minutes that it's time to get moving. Get your heart pumping for at least a minute. Walking works, or any exercise—the longer and the more intense the better. Standing desks aren't enough. Get up and move around! Keep the Reaper away today!

Turkey Trots aren't the only way to have a healthy Thanksgiving! Here are some other ways to keep your body happy:

1. Have breakfast. By making sure you still have breakfast (even a small one) you can set your body up for a good day.

2. Add an extra scoop of veggies. Even if it is green bean casserole, some extra veggies can help give us the fiber to digest our food.

3. Go for a walk. Before everyone passes out from tryptophan, take a few minutes to go on a walk with your loved ones and count your blessings this year.

4. Go easy on yourself! It's Thanksgiving! Feeling guilt about what you eat is never a good thing, so if you decide to indulge a little, that's ok! In fact, it can even be a good thing. Giving yourself the freedom to relax can be just as good for your cortisol levels, so take it easy on yourself and don't sweat having a piece of pie.

From everyone at Mid-State Wellness, happy Thanksgiving!
