I am happy to announce that I am offering a new therapy to my practice, Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), in partnership with an organization called Journey Clinical.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an exciting, holistic psychedelic modality in which Ketamine is used as a complement to traditional psychotherapy to help clients get stuck and experience long-lasting improvement in symptoms, particularly those with depression and anxiety.
I provide the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while Journey Clinical’s medical team supports you on all medical aspects, including determining eligibility, developing a treatment plan, prescribing the medicine, and monitoring outcomes. All sessions will be held at the Sattva Yoga and Wellness Center.
If you are interested and think this may be a good fit for you, or have someone you would like to refer, please contact me at jwindercounseling@ gmail.com and I will send you more detailed information.

Psychedelic Treatment
The use of psychedelics medication for the treatment of mental illness is beginning to lose its stigma and now is at the forefront of mental health research and treatment. A couple of years ago I attended a talk by Rick Dobbins, who has been one of the key people in this movement, has been working since the early 70’s to get M**A (better known as Ecstasy) approved for the treatment of PTSD. His work, which focuses on helping veterans with combat trauma, has now succeeded in going through all three FDA trials and should be legalized for treatment by the end of the year. The results have been dramatic. Often the patients, who had major problems with flashbacks, suicidal ideation and a variety of major mental illnesses including substance use disorders and may have been on a variety of anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications, are no longer symptomatic and no longer on drugs or medication. He projects that just as hospice centers were just starting up and available in only the larger cities and are now accessible in most all communities. He believes by 2035 there will be psychedelic treatment programs in every major community.

I have been trying to figure out how to decrease all the polarization and conflict in our world today. I finally figured out a solution. Despite the title of the popular book, people just need to start learning the subtle art of giving a f**k:
Forgiveness
Understanding
Compassion
Kindness
That’d do it, right? We need to lift each other up, not tear each other down.

Jon Winder offers counseling for trauma, anxiety, depression and addictions, in Lynchburg, Va, 24502 specializing in EMDR Therapy.

How cool is that!

She was constantly staying near the fish market and watching people come to buy fish. She took a leaf that fell from the tree and came to the owner. On the first day, surprised, he took her "money" and gave her a fish. From that day on, every morning she comes with a leaf to "buy" fish.

So many people are trying to fill some emptiness in their lives. Here are some thoughts about that:
My parents were flawed.
I tried to get them to respond to my needs.
They weren’t able to.
I have been trying to get from others what I didn’t get from them.
But people are not meant to be a way to fix my feelings.
I kept looking for this fantasy bond that would make me feel okay.
I was thinking that others had the key to unlock me so that I could feel happy.
I have been clobbering others with my needs.
It’s time to start taking out the emotional trash.
Self-pity is like holding a gun to your head and it won’t go off.
The only real key is through my higher power - love.

Butterflies at Auschwitz
A client of mine had a long history of physical abuse by an overbearing father and lived in constant fear never feeling he could please him. He suffered from depression and had made some progress before he left for a study project in Germany.
When he returned, he told me about his experience. As part of his fieldwork, he visited Auschwitz. He said, "Part of me was thinking this is the last place I need to be given my history of depression. I witnessed the places where victims were killed in gas chambers."
"But," he said, "You know, Jon, that's not what left the greatest impression on me. What I was most struck by were the flowers and plants around the facilities and even birds and butterflies. I thought, my God even in this place of unbelievable darkness torture and misery there were flowers and butterflies.
I thought of my past with the darkness and the torture I experienced as a child and realize I can leave it in the past and there can be butterflies in my life."
He said that his depression lessens and now every time he thinks about his past, he can transform it remembering the butterflies at Auschwitz.

I am happy to announce the development of the Drug and Alcohol Assessment Cards Deck
The DAAC Deck consists of 120 cards which help to assess the nature of an individual’s alcohol and/or drug problem. Clients pick out cards which relate to their alcohol or drug use.
Using cards to assess substance use disorders is a positive way to create a trusting relationship with clients which maximizes their comfort level in telling the full extent of their use.
Given this novel approach, clients often find this assessment, which might normally be stressful, to be interesting and non-threatening. They find it much easier to select a card than to verbally admit to items in the categories.
Areas addressed by the cards are:
a. Types of Substances Used
b. Feelings I Get When Using
c. Reasons for Using
d. Effects of Using

Empathy or Compassion
I was trained in massage therapy just after getting my Masters degree. My instructor, a very wise person, explain that pain is blocked energy and that as a massage therapist use the energy in your hands to unblock the other person’s energy, but you’re always giving energy out and you’re not absorbing it or taking it on. . Otherwise we would end up with arthritis and other ailments.
This was a very valuable lesson to me as a counselor also. I found out there is such a thing as having too much empathy. How is that possible? There is a difference between empathy and compassion. Empathy is taking on another person‘s feelings as your own whereas compassion is giving out energy in the form of concern, understanding , and love.but not taking on the other persons pain.
This is an important lesson for many of my clients…and keeps me centered.

Words are the vehicle of psychotherapy. Because they can be so powerful, it is important to choose our words carefully. Words can convey love, hope, strength, truth, balance and compassion, or they can convey doubt, fear, distrust, confusion and discouragement. Certain words or phrases therapists commonly use can undermine the effectiveness of the psychotherapeutic process, conveying unintended meanings, and causing resistance to therapy....
