Please voice your support now for Budget Item 295 #3. We have Medicaid pay parity for midwives through straight Medicaid, but we need to get MCOs on the team, too, for midwives to be truly accessible to all Medicaid families.

Please use this form to help us advocate for state funding to remove barriers for midwives who want to contract with managed care organizations (MCO) and serve their patients. The Senate of Virginia adopted budget amendment in item 295, which will provide critical funding for a Medicaid and Depa...

Don't miss this opportunity!

We've got a brand new FREE workshop for you this month, and we're super passionate about this topic!

Anxiety in Pregnancy, Childbirth, & Modern Parenting
Thursday, March 19 at Trillium House from 7-8:30pm. Always free and partners/support people always welcome!

Nearly 20% of new mothers report experiencing anxiety during pregnancy and postpartum, though these numbers are likely underestimated. While some of this is a "normal" adaptive biological response to keeping ourselves and our babies safe, anxiety in the perinatal period can also become pervasive - leading mothers and parents feeling exhausted, irritable, distressed, or like they have failed.

This workshop will provide a basis for what is typical or expected during this special time, and what may be a true perinatal mood disorder. Together we will explore why so many mothers are experiencing anxiety and discuss practical ways to prevent, address, and grow with it. Through personal reflection and intimate dialogue, we will dive into the means of connecting to our innate gift of Intuition as a natural antidote to perinatal anxiety.

Please share this around and we hope to see you there!

Shout-out to this humble champion of moms and babies, crossing traditional party lines alone in his support of what is clearly a bipartisan issue. Delegate Walker is a model for his conservative-voting colleagues, truly fighting for the value of human life at every stage.

We already knew this, but it sure is great to see the numbers!

Midwives = Excellent Care + VA Savings!
Virginia, let's make sure our legislators include Items 295 and 295 in the budget.

Huge thanks to Adrianna Ross, CPM, LM, our health equity intern, for creating this awesome graphic that breaks down the impact of midwives in Virginia!

If you think civil rights is history, check the stats on black maternal and neonatal mortality. The work's not done until every mom and baby gets a fair chance.

Today, we honor Martin Luther King Jr.

No matter how this day is acknowledged, revised, or dismissed, one truth remains unchanged, Dr. King’s legacy cannot be erased, diminished, or redefined.

His commitment to justice, dignity, and collective responsibility continues to guide movements that demand equity across every system, including Black Maternal Health. That principle lives on in the work to ensure safe, respectful, and affirming maternal health care for our communities.

Today is not just a day of remembrance. It is a time for community service, volunteering, and action. Share in the comments what you're doing for !

We HAVE to open our ears and our eyes and our hearts to this issue. It's not going anywhere until we each do our part.

We HAVE to open our ears and our eyes and our hearts to this issue. It's not going anywhere until we each do our part.

The American College of Nurse-Midwives mourns the devastating death of Dr. Janell Green Smith, CNM, who died from complications of childbirth. Dr. Smith was a respected midwife, scholar, and advocate whose life and work reflected a deep commitment to respectful, evidence-based, and equitable care.

That a Black midwife and maternal health expert died after giving birth in the United States is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. Her death underscores the persistent and well-documented reality that Black women—regardless of education, income, or professional expertise—face disproportionate risks during pregnancy and childbirth due to systemic racism and failures in care.

We grieve Dr. Smith’s loss and recognize it as a profound failure of the systems meant to protect birthing people. In her honor, ACNM commits not only to reaffirming our values, but to intensifying our actions to dismantle racial inequities in maternal health, strengthen accountability in care systems, and work alongside Black midwives, clinicians, and communities to prevent future tragedies.

We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Smith’s family, loved ones, and the midwifery community. We carry her legacy forward with urgency, humility, and resolve.

Regardless of where we each land in our personal vaccine decisions, it's refreshing to see the words "Individual-Based Decision-Making" in a CDC recommendation!

The CDC today adopted individual-based decision-making for hepatitis B immunization
