In a powerful co-authored article for USA TODAY, Jeanne White-Ginder, and Elton John reflect on the legacy of the Ryan White CARE Act and why now is a critical moment to protect and expand HIV prevention programs in the United States.

Passed just four months after Ryan’s death from AIDS in 1990 at the age of 18, the Ryan White CARE Act continues to provide essential care to over half a million Americans living with HIV.

The End the HIV Epidemic initiative has also already reduced new HIV infections by 21% in priority communities since its 2019 launch. But with proposed cuts to federal funding for HIV prevention and Medicaid on the table, this remarkable progress is at risk.

“Together, their investments over time have created this once-in-a-generation opportunity to end AIDS in America by 2030," said Elton John and Jeanne White-Ginder, Ryan White’s mother, as cuts are debated in Congress. “The game-changing opportunity of the moment is to scale up prevention medication that keeps people HIV-free… Ryan would expect nothing less.”

HIV hasn't gone away. In fact, an AIDS-related illness still kills someone every minute globally. But thanks to the foresight and support of both Republican and Democratic Congresses, American Presidents and the American people, we are making real progress towards finally ending this global crisis.

The proposed budget cuts will cost lives and money. Game-changing HIV prevention drugs offer a historic opportunity to drastically reduce new infections, making it easier for countries to sustain their own response to the epidemic. This must be a priority for the next phase of PEPFAR as well as the End the HIV Epidemic (EHE) Initiative in America. Without proper funding, however, rates could surge once more, squandering past investments and leaving Americans, and us all, less safe.

As Congress determines next year's budget, we call on this generation of lawmakers to leave the ultimate legacy – ending the AIDS crisis once and for all.

Happy International Clinical Trials Day 2025!

Today, Clinical Trials Day is celebrated globally. Marking the day in 1747 when James Lind, a ship’s surgeon, started what is often considered the first randomized clinical trial investigating the treatment of scurvy.

About Clinical Trials Day

Organized and promoted by ACRP since 2014, Clinical Trials Day (May 20) is a joyful opportunity to pause in reflection, recognition, and admiration of all that has been accomplished thanks to clinical trials and the people behind them.

Research in 2025

In 2025, there are over 900 infectious disease research trials. The infectious disease clinical trials market is projected to exceed $13 billion by 2032, with sustained interest in R&D3. Over the past five years, nearly 2,000 clinical infectious disease trials have been initiated, ongoing, or planned.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS!🚨 Today, President Trump released his FY26 “skinny budget" which has called for a cut of overall non-defense discretionary spending by $163 billion. We know with absolute certainty that the damage would be vast and that our communities would be irreparably harmed.

"More will be revealed in the coming days and weeks with regard to these proposed cuts by the Trump Administration, but our mission moving forward is clear: AIDS United is committed to working with all stakeholders to push back on these horrific cuts and demand Congress the HIV safety net with the programing and funding required to save lives and protect our futures."
