NEW Report from on “Improving Maternity Care Now Through Community Birth Settings.”
“Community birth” includes both planned home births and birth center births. Though there are many barriers to accessing this kind of care, it can be less costly than giving birth in a hospital, and more affirming for people who have previously been harmed in medical settings. From 2019 to 2020, there was a steep 20% increase in community births in the United States, driven primarily by BIPOC communities. When the care is community-based and -led and culturally concordant, it is an especially powerful way to meet the needs of birthing people of color and mitigate effects of racism and trauma.
