In 2001, Robert Johnson became the first Black billionaire when he sold the cable network he founded, Black Entertainment Television (BET), to Viacom. Johnson took out a $15,000 loan to launch BET in 1980. When he sold the channel, it reached 62.4 million homes.

Highlighting Gorden Parks

Parks was the first African American photographer on the staff of Life magazine, and later helped found Essence. He also was the first Black writer and director of a studio film, and his second movie, Shaft, helping to shape the blaxploitation era in the '70s. Parks famously told Life in 1999: "I saw that the camera could be a weapon against poverty, against racism, against all sorts of social wrongs. I knew at that point I had to have a camera."

Gregory Ray Chestnut of Amherst departed this life on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at Autumn Care of Altavista. 🇺🇸

A funeral service will be held 2pm on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at Fifth Street Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Archer Creek Cemetery. His remains will be open to the public one hour prior to the service. Family and friends will assemble at the church.

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first female African-American physician. She also wrote the Book of Medical Discourses in Two Parts in 1883, which is considered one of the first medical texts written by an African American author. After the Civil War, Dr. Crumpler also worked for the Freedman’s Bureau for the State of Virginia, the federal agency that helped over 4,000,000 slaves make the transition from slavery to freedom.
