Good news to start the week.

We’re excited to share that a photo of our officers and local high school students was selected as one of 12 winners nationwide in the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Highlighting Heroes photo contest.

The image captures officers and students working side by side last summer painting a mural focused on mental health and hope. This project began with young people who asked for support and partnership to help start the conversation about mental health. Our officers were proud to show up and stand beside them.

We are grateful for officers who care deeply about this community and aren't afraid to get a little paint on their uniforms. We are just as proud of the incredible students who used their voices, shared their vision, and worked hard to bring it to life.

Thank you to our community partners, Horizon Behavioral Health, Su***de Prevention Awareness Coalition, Get Hype Lynchburg and Hughes Supply for helping make this possible. This recognition belongs to all of you.

Here’s to starting the week with something positive and remembering that there is always hope.

How do we make mental health support easier for kids and teens to access? We bring it directly to them.

In this bonus podcast episode, Grant Tomey shares how school-based mental health services are removing barriers, helping students succeed academically and socially, and ensuring that kids can get help right where they are.

You’ll learn:
✔️ How school-based counseling improves accessibility
✔️ Signs a child or teen may be struggling
✔️ How to connect youth to additional mental health resources
✔️ Real stories of impact from local schools

As Grant reminds us: “There are people who want to help.” And sometimes, the first step is simply reaching out to a trusted adult.

If you care about youth mental health, education, or supporting families in our community, this episode is for you.

Listen now and share with a parent, educator, or friend who needs to hear it. 💙💛

Adedamola “Dammy” Onafowokan, Grant Project Director for the Lynchburg Adult Recovery and Bedford Family Recovery Courts (LARC & BFRC) at Horizon Behavioral Health, was recently recognized by Lynchburg Living Magazine as a Community Champion.

Community Champions were nominated by the Central Virginia community and represent "a group of dedicated individuals whose unwavering commitment to advocacy and service has significantly enhanced our community. These champions work both within organizations and directly in the community to support vulnerable populations, providing essential resources and support to those in need." - Lynchburg Living Magazine

As the Grant Project Director for LARC & BARC, Dammy works with individuals in our community involved in the legal system with substance use disorders, alongside judges, probation officers, and treatment providers who work with the individual to achieve and maintain an abstinent and healthy lifestyle in recovery: reuniting families and changing life paths.

TAKE THE YOUNG ADULT SURVEY! ✨️

Share your thoughts on substance use and mental health in our community! Results from this survey will be used to support important substance use and other prevention programming efforts across Central Virginia.

To complete this survey, you need to be between 18 and 25 years old, not have taken this in the past year, and you must be a Virginia resident OR live in Virginia most of the year (e.g., attend a college in the state).

In this survey, we ask you questions about alcohol, tobacco/vaping, prescription drug and other drug use, marijuana/cannabis, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, stimulants, mental health, and gambling/gaming. Some questions ask you to reflect on your own use or non-use and others ask for your perceptions of substance use in your community.

This survey is completely anonymous and does not record any personal identifying information.

We very much appreciate your input to guide future programs to support young adults in Central Virginia!

Text "Virginia" to 844-484-7601 to take the survey!
