Today, July 24th, is national self-care day. The International Self Care Foundation established this day in 2011 as a symbol that the benefits of self-care are experienced 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week and not just during the self care activity. Many of my clients share life changing experiences from just one single session. Self-care isn't just about indulging in luxuries. This may be a shock to most, but at its source, self-care is not even about honoring your body and mind’s needs.
You may be saying to yourself what? Isn’t Self-care all about ME, ME, ME????
Surprisingly, it’s not.
Self-care, at its root, is about providing for your loved ones in the best possible way you can.
If you are having trouble wrapping your mind around taking care of yourself, and putting aside the resources to do so, think of how your self-care will affect those around you.
For instance, my clients often share with me that they find themselves becoming calmer and less quick to react, at home and work, amidst conflict, de-escalating situations that would normally get out of hand quickly. Individuals and companies spend billions of dollars a year on leadership training to teach this skill when the answer seems to be a byproduct of Self-Care.
