"She's testing me”

"He's defying me all the time”

"They won't listen to me”

"He's trying to annoy me”

"She doesn't care how much it bothers me”

Me, me, me, me, me.

Your child is massively unlikely to be concerned with you when they're in the middle of a meltdown...they're entirely more likely to be wrapped up in themselves. Because they're two or three or four (or eight) and their world is egocentric.

You are the adult. You are the one with the cognitive capacity to think into the future in a way that your child cannot. You are the one with the knowledge to ride out the emotion until it is over. An emotion is like a train going through a tunnel -- there's no way out but to go through.
When your child's whole entire world is wrapped up in how things feel so, so bad right at this moment, you're the one who can remember that it will pass, and breathe, and co-regulate.

[Image description: A picture of a crying child, next to words which read, “Your child is not trying to upset YOU. Your child isn’t even thinking about YOU. Your child is struggling and dealing with their own strong emotions.” End description.]

When Gwen Goldman was 10 years old, she wrote a letter to the Yankees asking to be their bat girl — the person responsible for retrieving bats during the game. The letter she received back on June 12, 1961 told her that girls did not belong in the dugout.

Sixty years later, the team righted this wrong. Last night, Goldman donned a full Yankees uniform and threw out the ceremonial first pitch, collected bats, and gave fist bumps to all of the players. Looks like Gwen is proof that girls DO belong in the dugout ⚾👏
