7. Stay Safe in Cold Weather

Winter brings risks such as hypothermia and frostbite, especially for older adults and young children. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) warns that body temperature below 95°F (35°C) can be dangerous and requires immediate medical attention (NIA, 2023).

Winter Safety Tips:

• Wear layers to trap heat
• Keep walkways clear of ice to prevent falls
• Avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures

Originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents' Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers.

5. Protect Your Skin from Winter Dryness

Cold air outside and indoor heating inside can strip moisture from your skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and cracking.

Winter Skincare Tips:
• Use a fragrance-free moisturizer with ceramides and hyaluronic acid
• Apply sunscreen – UV rays are still strong in winter!

Run a humidifier to add moisture to indoor air

4. Stay Hydrated – Even When It’s Cold

People tend to drink less water in winter, leading to dehydration, which can cause fatigue, dry skin, and headaches. The Mayo Clinic suggests aiming for at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day, and adjusting based on activity levels (Mayo Clinic, 2023).

Try: Herbal teas, warm lemon water, or broth-based soups to stay hydrated.

3. Prioritize Mental Health: Beat the Winter Blues

Winter’s shorter days and reduced sunlight can lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression affecting around 5% of U.S. adults (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023). Symptoms include low energy, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes.

Ways to Improve Mood:
• Spend time outdoors when the sun is out
• Use a light therapy lamp (recommended 10,000 lux for 20–30 minutes daily)
• Stay socially connected through in-person or virtual gatherings
• Consider professional counseling if symptoms persist
