Plant medicines incorporated into a daily routine provide optimal nutrition and disease prevention. Often times disease prevention is something we don't consider until a diagnosis comes. Consider the long term plan for your health goals today and learn how the abundance of resources from herbal medicine can support you to make those goals happen!
Early in my healthcare career I had the opportunity to work with a very diverse population of elders. I was a home care provider in southwest Colorado where my caseload involved traveling around the region, including visits to many Native American elders. I was a pre-med student with a staunch belief that pharmaceuticals are the only form a medicine, a mantra my training had drilled into me. Yet what I witnessed day to day told another story. I had a collection of standard American patients who took increasing amounts of medications and I witnessed them become more debilitated over time. When I would visit them they would need assistance bathing, getting dressed, bathroom support, meal prep and more.
Then I had another collection of patients who utilized their traditional medicine systems with plant medicines as their primary health resource. While they were still old and had lost the strength and flexibility of their younger days, they didn't need much from me. Dusting off ceiling fans, sorting through mail, helping remove pests on the property (one memorable visit trying to coax a rattlesnake to live elsewhere!) were the tasks they needed me for.
The stories could go on from experiences I had at that job, and of course this is one snippet from a small population but over 5 years the trend was evident to me. Those who relied on plant medicines throughout their lifetimes had more capacity with their health in their old age than those who had relied on pharmaceutical drugs as their health resource.
Thus my career path pivoted and thankfully the naturopathic medical education exists to provide medical training equivalent to MD school and natural medicine woven in, both systems working together for the best opportunity in health.
