🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🌸

🌼Today we're talking about How to Schedule a Mammogram! 🌺

🌸Before being able to schedule a mammogram, you might need a referral from a doctor if you are under the age of 40, have already received your annual screening mammogram for the year, have an abnormal breast symptom, or have had breast cancer in the past. If you are 40 years or older and simply seeking a screening mammogram without any of the exceptions mentioned, it’s unlikely you will be asked for a doctor’s referral. 🌺
🩷 You can contact Women First at 📞207-255-0014 & we can order a mammogram for you! 💚

✨What Type of Mammogram to Schedule✨
🌷Screening mammogram: If you don’t have any symptoms or pain, and just need your yearly mammogram.
🌷Diagnostic mammogram: If you have continuous and persistent pain, redness, a lump, discharge, or other concerns that need to be evaluated. Diagnostic mammograms are also done after irregular findings in a routine screening mammogram.

🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🌸

✨Today we're talking about treatments for Breast Cancer! 🩷

✨Treatments✨
🌸In general, there are five treatment options, and most treatment plans include a combination of the following: surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies. Some are local, targeting just the area around the tumor. Others are systemic, targeting your whole body with cancer fighting agents.

✨Surgery ✨
🌹The most common form of treatment for breast cancer is surgery. This involves removing the tumor and nearby margins. Surgical options may include a lumpectomy, mastectomy, and reconstruction.

✨Chemotherapy✨
🌺Chemotherapy is a treatment method that uses a combination of drugs to either destroy cancer cells or slow down the growth of cancer cells.

✨Radiation Therapy✨
🌷Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells. It affects cells only in the part of the body that is treated with the radiation.

✨Hormone Therapy✨
🌸Based on the pathologist’s findings, your doctor may recommend hormone therapy drugs. One option are SERMs (selective estrogen receptor modulators), which block the body’s natural estrogen from attaching to breast cancer cells and are given to premenopausal women. Another option are AIs (aromatase inhibitors), which help to lower estrogen levels in the body and are designed for postmenopausal women.

✨Targeted Therapy✨
🌼In addition to chemotherapy and hormone therapy, there are newer, more effective treatments that can attack specific breast cancer cells without harming normal cells. Currently, these biologic targeted methods are commonly used in combination with traditional chemotherapy.

🩷 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! 🌸

🌸 Today we're talking about BRCA: The Breast Cancer Gene 🩷

✨What Is BRCA? ✨
🌸The name “BRCA” is an abbreviation for “BReast CAncer gene.” BRCA1 and BRCA2 are two different genes that have been found to impact a person’s chances of developing breast cancer.
🌷Every human has both the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Despite what their names might suggest, BRCA genes do not cause breast cancer. In fact, these genes normally play a big role in preventing breast cancer. They help repair DNA breaks that can lead to cancer and the uncontrolled growth of tumors. Because of this, the BRCA genes are known as tumor suppressor genes.
🌺However, in some people these tumor suppression genes do not work properly. When a gene becomes altered or broken, it doesn’t function correctly. This is called a gene mutation.

✨BRCA Mutations✨
🌸A small percentage of people (about one in 400, or 0.25% of the population) carry mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. A BRCA mutation occurs when the DNA that makes up the gene becomes damaged in some way.
🥀When a BRCA gene is mutated, it may no longer be effective at repairing broken DNA and helping to prevent breast cancer. Because of this, people with a BRCA gene mutation are more likely to develop breast cancer, and more likely to develop cancer at a younger age. The carrier of the mutated gene can also pass a gene mutation down to his or her offspring.
