🔥 Inflammation and C-Reactive Protein (& How to Lower)
🧪 C-Reactive Protein is a bio marker for inflammation in our body.
Inflammation is our immune system’s protective response which is activated when there is tissue damage or infection.
💀 This type of normal response is acute (short lived), but our body can also have chronic inflammation (prolonged). Chronic inflammation is the silent killer, as most people don’t know their body is in this state of destroying itself from the inside out.
📈 A chronically elevated CRP level is a risk factor for diabetes, hypertension, cancer, arthritis, heart disease, premature aging, and a host of other conditions. A CRP level consistently above 3 mg/L is considered high risk and an indicator that you have some type of chronic inflammation in your body.
🔥 CRP is synthesized in the liver in response to increased inflammation. It circulates through our blood stream searching for a specific pattern on the surface of cells that is a signature of cell death or necrosis. Specifically, dying cells express a higher level of lysophosphotidylcholine on their surface, which is a molecular signature that tells our immune system the cell is in trouble.
🦠 After recognition, CRP activates an innate immune response called the complement response. This response recruits other immune system cells that engulf the dying cell, remove it from the tissue, and recycle its components.
Fat tissue can signal our immune system to activate CRP production and inflammation. So one way to lower inflammation is to lower the amount of fat tissue. Changing our diet and exercise also lowers CRP levels.
