We want to wish our very own brother, FF Joe Warne & Neighbors United a safe walk as he begins his 7th journey across the state helping firefighters battling cancer. His walk begins at Shelby TWP Fire Station 1 and will conclude at Cascade TWP Fire Department in Ada, MI.

Your Local 5023 Firefighters wish you a safe and happy Labor Day! Thank you for your continued support.

🚨Staffing Reality Check🚨

Saturday and Sunday: only 8-9 full-time firefighters were left to cover the entire township. Yes, we’re hiring 6 more full time firefighters, buts it’s a process.

Today (Labor Day): magically, every single shift slot is filled—by part-time firefighters. Why? Time and a half pay.

Here's the problem: Sunday was the day we needed people the most. Two of our stations were pulled out of the township for mutual aid to Harrison Township, leaving our own residents exposed with dangerously thin coverage.

When the call for service comes in, residents don't care about pay rates— they expect firefighters at their door.
The township is gambling with your safety by depending on a system that fails until overtime pay is on the table.

📢 Board Meeting Results
âś… Hiring 6 full-time firefighters
âś… Hiring 1 full-time training officer
➡️ All of this was done within the fire budget.

Thank you to the board members for being engaged and recognizing our issues, and we look forward to working with you to make this department the best possible.

This is a great step forward. That adds 2 extra full-time firefighters per shift, bringing us up to 12 per day—if no one is off. As our community continues to grow, we’ll keep pushing for the NFPA standard of at least 15-17 full-time firefighters on shift every day to keep residents safe. 🚒

🔥 We’re Frustrated and You Should Be Too 🔥

This is today’s staffing at YOUR fire department: inconsistent, unreliable, and unsafe.

How long can our community afford to operate like this? Tonight, the township board is finally discussing our staffing levels. This is about the safety of our families, neighbors, and first responders.

We can’t fight for safer staffing alone. We need YOU — residents, families, and fellow departments — to stand with us.

Here’s the problem with our current part-time model: NO CONSISTENCY.

Take a look at today’s schedule:
• 0700–1400: 13 Firefighters
• 1400–1800: 12 Firefighters
• 1800–0200: 13 Firefighters
• 0200–0600: 12 Firefighters

Why does staffing have to fluctuate throughout the day when our community deserves consistent, reliable coverage 24/7?

With a full-time model, you don’t get unpredictable gaps. You get consistent , dependable firefighters at the station around the clock—ready when the community needs them most.

Congratulations to our brother Mike Risk on his incredible performance at the Firefighter Challenge Championship Series this weekend!

Mike and Nate set a new Division 3 state record with an impressive time of 1:59.87 and also helped secure 3rd place in the relay alongside his teammates:
• Pete Nye – Port Huron Twp. FD
• Nate Kean – Dearborn Heights FD
• Christopher Brinkley – Akron FD
• Nick Pieschel – Fort Lauderdale FD
