Earlier today, your Local 5023 Firefighters responded to a two-story residential home for reports of smoke inside the residence.
Upon arrival, crews found the home filled with smoke and immediately upgraded the incident to a working structure fire. Firefighters made entry and located fire in the basement with heavy smoke conditions. The fire was initially extinguished, however, crews later discovered extension within the walls of the first and second floors. Those areas were opened up, the remaining fire was located, and the incident was successfully brought under control.
Everyone was safely evacuated from the home. One dog was rescued, and thankfully, there were no injuries.
At the time of the incident, the department was operating on a “full” staffing schedule with 12 full-time firefighters on duty with no part time scheduled for the day.
We would like to thank our neighboring fire departments for their assistance:
• Shelby Township Firefighters IAFF Local 1338 for supplying an additional 4 firefighters
• Selfridge National Air Base Fire Department for providing an additional 4 firefighters to staff a RIT team
• Ray Township Fire & Rescue for manning Station 1 and taking calls while crews were operating on the scene
