It is extremely important that everyone knows exactly what just happened in Mississippi today. The state Supreme Court decided that our ballot initiative process is completely invalid on the dumbest of technicalities. Not only did the court just overturn the result of a ballot initiative that over 70% of Mississippians voted to pass -- it also determined that no ballot initiatives can move forward for the foreseeable future.

Here's how we got here. Initiatives have to get a certain number of signatures from eligible voters to quality for the ballot. When this particular law was written, it said that a maximum of 1/5 of signatures can come from a single Congressional district. At the time, we had five districts, but due to population loss, Mississippi dropped to four districts in the early 2000s. This makes it *mathematically impossible* to meet the standard in the law.

This decision has huge ramifications. The state Supreme Court has just taken away the only way that citizens can make laws without legislative interference -- and then said that the legislature is the only institution with the power to change it.

You should be concerned about this, regardless of your position on the issue at hand (medical ma*****na). We have had other initiatives qualify for the ballot and pass since this change happened without this level of scrutiny. The state Supreme Court has just sent a message that the will of the people does not matter when it does not want it to.

If you're in Mississippi, I hope you will join me in talking to your elected officials in the state legislature about amending this law without delay.

**Remember: They will be up for re-election in two years. The members of our state Supreme Court are elected, too. It's time to turn complacency into accountability.

CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED! The final stab at elite overstepping in Congress was struck down today as the text of SB2765 was removed from HB119 and passed as it was originally intended for patients! Thank you to everyone who was active in helping root out those who sought to overthrow the will of the people of Mississippi!
