What is hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery?
It’s a surgery of the digestive tract that includes liver, pancreas and bile ducts as well as complex gastrointestinal (GI) procedures.
Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Cancer Center is thrilled to welcome Dr. Dr. Salah Abdel Jalil who specializes in these procedures.
He recently visited with the Perry Rotary Club to share about what providing these options close to home means for those in central Georgia.

Atrium Health Navicent is the first in central Georgia to utilize the Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy procedure, which allows physicians to precisely examine and collect tissue samples from the hard-to-reach periphery of the lungs where more than 70 percent of lung cancers occur.

This allows physicians to examine airways of the lungs to diagnose lung cancer and other lung diseases such as infections and inflammatory conditions. While a patient is under anesthesia, a doctor uses an ultra-thin, highly maneuverable robotic catheter to reach parts of the lungs not accessible through a standard biopsy. The technology uses CT scan data to generate a 3D image of the patient’s lungs, showing details such as the lung’s branches and nodules.

Breast Health Awareness Paper Doll silhouettes made their debut in central and south Georgia last week as part of Atrium Health Navicent’s effort to encourage women to undergo regular breast health screenings for early cancer detection and treatment.

The silhouettes feature the slogan ‘Knowledge is Power,’ encouraging women to take power over the disease that affects an average 1 in 8 women in their lifetime. Proactive breast care offers the best protection against the disease for both women and men. Women are encouraged to see themselves, a friend or a family member in one of the figures.

The life-sized paper doll silhouettes will be visible outside Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Cancer Center and Atrium Health Navicent Diagnostics Zebulon through Oct. 31 to help raise awareness and urge women to schedule an annual mammogram.

It’s recommended that all women have a baseline screening mammogram at age 40, and in some cases, women between the ages of 35 and 39 may also need a baseline mammogram.

For additional information about cancer services, including mammograms and other screenings, contact Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Cancer Center at 478-633-3000.

Regular mammograms are key to detecting breast cancer early on and for patients to have the best odds of survival. Veronica Christy, lead mammography technologist at the Breast Care Center withinat Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Cancer Center, helps leads those efforts with a focus on compassion for patients and providing world-class care during screenings.

Veronica doesn’t have to look far to find her ‘why.’ Various notes from grateful patients are displayed on a bulletin board in her office.

“I've been in this role for a little over a year, and it’s had all sorts of ups and downs,” Veronica says. “The biggest thing for me is making sure that we are doing all we can for the patient and get the best possible images for them that we can.”
