World Kidney Day is a reminder that kidney disease often develops quietly.

Most people don’t feel symptoms in the early stages. That’s why routine lab work, blood pressure control, and early conversations with your provider matter.

Your kidneys filter waste, balance fluids, and support heart health every single day. Protecting them starts with awareness.

If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or abnormal kidney lab results, ask your primary care provider if a nephrology referral is right for you.

Early evaluation can make a meaningful difference.

Most kidney conditions don’t start with obvious symptoms.
In many cases, the first signs show up in routine lab work.

Changes in creatinine, eGFR, or protein in the urine can signal that the kidneys aren’t filtering the way they should. These changes are often small at first, which is why regular lab monitoring matters.

If your primary care provider notices changes in your kidney labs, a nephrologist can help evaluate what’s happening and monitor kidney function over time.

Understanding your numbers is an important part of protecting your long-term health.

This past weekend, Dr. Ellis had the privilege of speaking at the Red Dress Leadership Luncheon on the importance of protecting your heart and kidneys.

Heart health and kidney health are closely connected, and education is one of the most powerful tools we have in prevention.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to be part of conversations that truly impact our community. ❤️

If you have concerns about your kidney health, ask your primary care provider if a nephrology referral is right for you.

Most people don’t think twice about taking ibuprofen or naproxen. But frequent or long-term use can affect kidney blood flow — especially if you have high blood pressure, diabetes, dehydration, or existing kidney concerns.

If you have risk factors, talk with your primary care provider about whether NSAIDs are safe for you and if a nephrology referral is appropriate.

Your GFR number tells us how well your kidneys are working… and many people don’t even realize what it means.

Kidney disease often has no symptoms in the early stages. Routine lab work can make all the difference.

If you’ve been told your GFR is low or trending downward, it may be time to ask questions.

👉 Ask your primary care provider if a nephrology referral is right for you.

Why Swelling Happens in Kidney Disease

Swelling, also called edema, can occur when the kidneys are not filtering properly.

Healthy kidneys remove excess fluid and help maintain the right balance of salt in the body. When kidney function declines:
• Extra fluid can build up in the bloodstream
• Sodium retention increases
• Fluid leaks into surrounding tissues

This often leads to swelling in:
• Feet and ankles
• Lower legs
• Hands
• Around the eyes

In nephrology, edema is a sign that the body may be holding onto more fluid than it should. Monitoring fluid balance, sodium levels, and kidney function helps determine the cause and guide treatment.

Persistent or worsening swelling should be evaluated, especially if it is accompanied by changes in urination, shortness of breath, or rapid weight gain.

In kidney disease, the balance of certain minerals becomes especially important.

Sodium helps regulate fluid and blood pressure, but too much can lead to swelling and increased blood pressure.
Potassium supports heart and muscle function, but abnormal levels can affect heart rhythm when kidneys can’t remove excess properly.
Phosphorus is important for bone health, yet high levels can weaken bones and strain blood vessels when kidney function declines.

In nephrology, monitoring and managing these minerals is a key part of protecting the heart, bones, and remaining kidney function. This is why lab work and individualized guidance matter.

Ask your primary care physician if a nephrology referral is right for you!

Why Anemia Is Common in Kidney Disease

Healthy kidneys help make a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO).
This hormone tells your bone marrow to make red blood cells.

When kidney function declines:
• Less erythropoietin is produced
• Fewer red blood cells are made
• Oxygen delivery throughout the body decreases

This leads to anemia, a common complication of chronic kidney disease.

People with kidney-related anemia may experience:
• Fatigue or low energy
• Shortness of breath
• Dizziness or weakness
• Difficulty concentrating

In nephrology, anemia is monitored through blood tests and managed as part of overall kidney care. Treating anemia can improve quality of life and reduce strain on the heart while supporting long-term kidney health.

Ask your primary care provider if a nephrology referral is right for you.
