Our independent, nonprofit network offers highly specialized medical and surgical services to treat conditions ranging from common to the most unusual and complex at our 358-bed children’s hospital as well as through partner hospitals, specialty care centers, satellite practices and primary care services. Our family-centered, pediatric services extend from a leading pediatric cancer and blood diseases center on the West Coast, and our pediatric heart center known for its expertise and pioneering treatments, to our Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the highest level referral center between Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Valley Children’s consistently ranks at the top of our peer group for quality patient outcomes, patient satisfaction and nursing excellence. Recognized as a Magnet® designated facility since 2004 and granted the gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence™ in critical care, Valley Children’s neonatal and pediatric intensive care units achieve some of the lowest mortality rates in the country while treating some of the sickest kids. News and World Report again named Valley Children’s one of the best children’s hospitals in the country in seven pediatric specialties. Valley Children's is proud to recognize Respiratory Care Practitioner Ernesto Aguilar as our newest PHIL Award recipient, honoring his extraordinary compassion and dedication to patient and family care! 🦋

The Pulmonary Health & Illnesses of the Lungs (PHIL) Award is the only national hospital-based recognition program celebrating respiratory therapists for excellence in compassionate care. Ernesto was nominated by a patient family for his calm, unwavering presence at their child's bedside while he supported their breathing by hand for nearly 30 minutes – a practice occasionally used to help patients breathe more deeply until medications wear off. The family says a simple "thank you" could never be enough for all the support he provided to them during a scary, uncertain time.

All respiratory therapists at Valley Children's are eligible for a PHIL Award nomination, which can be submitted by patients, families or staff who wish to recognize exceptional, compassionate care. Meet Luke - an athlete, philanthropist and grateful patient. 🏀✨💙

In 2023, 10-year-old Luke was injured playing football at his school in Los Banos, and was transported to Valley Children's for emergency surgery. After his surgery, Luke stayed in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) where it was discovered he had Guillain-Barré syndrome, a condition in which the body attacks itself and, in Luke’s case, can cause nerve damage. Luke lost the ability to walk and began using a wheelchair. But with unwavering family support and great care from our rehab team, he rediscovered movement, joy and community!

Today, Luke is thriving! As an active member of our Valley Children's Hospital Adaptive Sports program, he has embraced the new opportunities that have come his way - like meeting fellow athlete and Valley Children's Supporter Derek Carr. With the support of his family and friends, he also raised $5,000 to support Valley Children’s PICU and Rehabilitation Department to give back to the people who made such a difference in his life.
