🧠 Adhesive capsulitis, aka Frozen Shoulder, is a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the shoulder capsule, particularly the rotator cuff interval. This shoulder dysfunction has three distinct stages and each phase has its own goals for rehabilitation.
🧊 Freezing Stage: Characterized by pain > stiffness. The goal here is to minimize pain and prevent a loss of range of motion. Aggressive, end-range techniques are contraindicated as this will just further inflame the capsular, create greater pain, and result in increased joint contracture.
❄️ Frozen Stage: Characterized by stiffness > pain. During this stage, inflammation begins to subside; therefore, mobility exercises and joint mobilizations can be progressed in intensity.
🌞 Thawing Stage: Characterized by improving mobility. End-range joint mobilizations and an aggressive range of motion program can commence.
☝️ These 3 exercises above specifically stretch the area of the shoulder that becomes inflamed and fibrotic. It is a progression with each subsequent exercise a little more strenuous.
Hope this helps!
