Dr. Jessica Schmidt, an associate professor and Fulbright U.S. Scholar, has been honored for her leadership in developing emergency ultrasound access and education in low-resource settings worldwide.

In her 10 years as a University of Wisconsin-Madison faculty member, Dr. Schmidt has built partnerships in East Africa, Central America, and South America that are bringing point-of-care ultrasound to the bedside to improve disease diagnosis and patient care.

She received the 2025 Innovations and Impact Award (iAward) from the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships last month in recognition of her innovation, scholarship, and sustainable program building.

The award caps an exciting year for Dr. Schmidt, who spent the first half of 2025 in Rwanda, with support from The Fulbright Program, studying how ultrasound can improve the detection and treatment of pediatric pneumonia — one of the world’s leading causes of death among children under five.

PGY-3 resident Michael Lawson recently spent four weeks at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston 🚀🌌🩺

“The elective experience was great! It covered a broad range of space medicine topics: spatial disorientation in flight, dive medicine, hyperbarics, altitude decompression sickness, ultrasound capabilities in space, risk assessments for human spaceflight, SANS, extravehicular activities (spacewalk) physiology, among many others.

“I also toured NASA facilities, reviewed the current ISS medical kits and ISS health maintenance systems, and learned about the multidisciplinary approach needed to care for people remotely and in space.

“I met with many NASA researchers/physicians, potential future research mentors, NASA flight surgeons, fellowship directors, several physician trainees and attendings participating in the clerkship, including an ESA (European Space Agency) flight surgeon.

“I appreciated how the elective covered medical and physiologic concepts while applying them to what may be practical for current and future space travel.

“Thanks to the DEM Residency team for their help in making this experience possible for me!”

Last month, we had the privilege of working with EMS partners to deploy a field hospital as the Luke Bryan Farm Tour returned to Dane County.

An EMS-based field hospital (pictured) helps manage patient surges at mass-gathering events or disasters that could otherwise overwhelm local EMS and hospital infrastructure.

Our team — led by Dr. Michael Spigner and including residents and fellows — supported planning, operations, staffing, and integration of the concert’s field hospital with regional EMS and hospitals. The rural setting added unique challenges, but through great teamwork, we had a safe and successful event!

Dr. Spigner and colleagues recently published insights on this model in Prehospital Emergency Care: https://doi.org/10.1080/10903127.2025.2556442

Please join us in congratulating our very own Dr. Andrew Cathers who was recently named an AAMS 40 Under 40 Rising Leader in Medical Transport! This prestigious recognition celebrates young professionals under the age of 40 who are redefining leadership, innovation, and excellence in disciplines ranging from clinical care to communications to operations, safety, and advocacy. Congratulations, Dr. Cathers!

Every year, our residents take part in high-fidelity training at our campus anatomy lab 🧠👩🏻‍🔬🧬

This experience offers an invaluable opportunity to practice rare but critical procedures, such as:

✦ Pericardiocentesis
✦ Lateral canthotomies
✦ Cricothyrotomies
✦ Surgical chest tubes
✦ Ultrasound-guided arthrocentesis and nerve blocks

Behind every skill gained is a profound gift — we are grateful for the donors whose generosity makes this experience possible.
