Across the pond and straight into high-stakes trauma training 🇬🇧

Our three Retrieval and Critical Care Transport fellows recently visited the U.K. to complete the ATACC course — one of the most advanced trauma and critical care training courses in the world.

Over three intense days, they worked through complex trauma cases alongside an international group of clinicians, using high-fidelity simulation and live actors.

They were joined by Dr. Ryan Newberry, one of three UW Emergency Medicine faculty who serve as ATACC faculty, underscoring the department’s role in global critical care transport education.

Grateful to see this important work highlighted at .

We’re proud to see Michael Pulia, MD, PhD, contributing to this multidisciplinary conversation on the physiologic and inflammatory cascade of aspiration — a critical area of study in understanding and preventing conditions like aspiration pneumonia.

Dr. Pulia’s focus on pulmonary inflammation and injury following aspiration brings essential clinical and scientific insight, helping bridge cellular mechanisms with real-world consequences at the bedside.

Thank you to the Dysphagia Research Society for convening leaders across disciplines to advance this field, and to Dr. Pulia for representing UW Emergency Medicine and helping shape the future of patient care.

This multidisciplinary panel integrates physiology, infectious disease, oral health, and applied clinical frameworks to deepen our understanding of aspiration’s downstream impact. Presenters will discuss strategies for assessing relative aspiration risk, applying clinical decision making tools, and implementing therapeutic interventions aimed at reducing complications and improving patient outcomes. We are proud to partner with the Orion Initiative to lead Specialty Training at Rural Sites (STARS) – Pediatric Prehospital Care.

This project aims to close a critical gap in rural emergency care for children by bringing advanced, hands-on simulation training directly to emergency medical services (EMS) clinicians in rural communities. EMS teams train alongside UW faculty with expertise in pediatrics and EMS systems, practicing real-world medical scenarios to prepare for the moments that matter most.

We thank our founding EMS partners, Berlin EMS and Southern Green Lake County Ambulance, for endeavoring together to deliver state-of-the-art care to vulnerable pediatric patients with complex health care needs.

A big congratulations to Dr. Nicholas Genthe on passing his EMS boards! 🚑

Dr. Genthe is an assistant professor of emergency medicine and serves as medical director for Dane County District One EMS. He's also a graduate of our accredited residency and EMS fellowship programs.

He joins the majority of our physician medical directors in being dual board-certified in Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services.

We’re proud to celebrate this milestone and grateful for the work Dr. Genthe does alongside EMS teams across our communities every day. 👏

The Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 12 has honored Dr. Collin Michels with a 2025 Servant Leadership Supervisor Recognition Award — a distinction that reflects how he shows up for his team every day.

VISN 12 spans VA health care facilities across Illinois, Indiana, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and Wisconsin, including the Madison VA Hospital and Clinics, where Dr. Michels serves as emergency department service chief.

The VA defines servant leadership as investing in people by fostering growth, encouraging self-reflection, and creating a culture where everyone within the organization has the opportunity to thrive. Those who work alongside Dr. Michels see that commitment firsthand.

At the Department of Emergency Medicine, we’re proud to celebrate leaders who strengthen teams and advance safe, effective care for our nation’s Veterans. Thank you, Dr. Michels, for leading with integrity, advocacy, respect, and excellence.

🚑🚨 New research from Dr. Michael Spigner, director of prehospital research and informatics, lends new insight to a national debate over when the use of lights and sirens outweighs risk in emergency response.

Dr. Spigner assessed more than 26,000 EMS transports in Dane County using modern mapping data to accurately predict travel times. The median benefit: about 3 minutes per trip.

That time matters in some cases. But lights and sirens also triple the risk of ambulance crashes and remain a leading cause of occupational death for paramedics in the United States.

The study provides a new, scalable method for EMS systems to generate local data and make informed decisions on the safe and optimal use of lights and sirens.

For this work, Dr. Spigner received the Best Scientific Presentation award at the 2026 National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) Annual Meeting, selected from 350 blinded submissions.

“Further research is needed to determine the conditions that truly justify the use of lights and sirens during transport, but our work emphasizes the need for a more selective, evidence-based approach that prioritizes the safety of patients, EMS clinicians, and the public,” Spigner said.
