Female firefighters are a relatively understudied population within the fire service. That’s because firefighting has historically been a profession held by males. As female firefighter numbers increase, researchers want to understand their unique occupational cancer exposures and risks, including their breast cancer risk.

In a recent study, researchers confirmed evidence that at least a dozen firefighter chemical exposures may be increasing the risk of breast cancer in the fire service. This finding is incredibly important, especially as lawmakers have the ability to write legislation that compensates firefighters for work-related diseases by recognizing breast cancer as a likely result of a firefighter’s occupation.

The researchers concluded: “Since females have been a small proportion of firefighters in the past, breast cancer has rarely been noted as an occupational hazard; this pattern has changed with many more females entering the fire services. Thus, the information compiled here is vital for informing efforts to further reduce exposures to the twelve chemicals or chemical groups identified as high priorities based on our study.”

Tier 5 forces first responders to work longer in jobs proven to shorten lives.

Night shifts, chronic stress, and repeated exposure to trauma already drive higher rates of heart disease, cancer, burnout, and injury among police, firefighters, and EMS.

Tier 5 increases years of service and retirement age while cutting benefits and eliminating guaranteed cost-of-living protections—pushing first responders deeper into the highest-risk years of their careers. The price of action is dollars. The price of inaction is lives.
