In a recent interview with Wisconsin Public Radio's Rob Ferrett, WHA President and CEO Kyle O’Brien stressed the importance of patients with Medicare Advantage plans checking that their hospitals and doctors are still in network before they re-enroll this enrollment season. He noted, “We're seeing a tightening of the marketplace in Medicare Advantage plans dropping hospitals out of their network or even hospitals [opting out of MA plans] saying the commercial insurance burdens like prior authorization and other things have become too difficult and too time consuming for our providers.”

“The American Medical Association (AMA) says that 9 in 10 physicians report that prior authorization “somewhat or significantly” increases physician burnout. Ninety-three percent of physicians said the process delays care, and 82% of physicians report that prior authorization leads to treatment abandonment,” says Kyle O’Brien, President and CEO of WHA, in today’s Wisconsin State Journal. He continued, “The assertion that prior authorization is somehow a benefit to treating providers is severely out of touch.”

“For those in health care, this... adds to significantly shifting sands occurring in the Medicare Advantage market,” said Christian Moran, WHA’s Senior Director of Medicaid & Payer Reimbursement Policy. He adds, “With so many options to consider before the Medicare open enrollment deadline, it is important for Wisconsin seniors to begin comparison shopping now and consult with trusted resources to find the Medicare plan (traditional or Advantage) that best meets their needs and budget.”
