Preserving sight for humans is the primary goal of the McPherson ERI, but several Institute members are engaged in research to protect vision in humans’ closest friends: dogs and cats. One basic challenge is getting a clear read of an individual animal’s vision in the first place. McPherson ERI member Freya Mowat recently published a study that highlights a promising technique for assessing canine vision. (And Dr. Mowat's lab participates each year in Cycle for Sight. You can too!)
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have taken a novel approach to assessing canine vision. Their recent study uses a dog's interest in a variety of video content to better measure the quality of its vision.
