Special Olympics this morning. 💜 Unfortunately it started raining buckets right as it was time for her event and then they canceled the rest of the day. She had fun hanging with mom and dad and cheering and snacking.

We all had so much fun at The Riley Center spooktacular event today! Reagan went as herself with her usual accessories-her tiara and a magic wand. And she has now had candy for lunch.

In autism care, “pairing before placing demands” is everything. 💙

When I meet a new child/patient with autism, I don’t rush into questions or exams. I always spend time pairing. I take time to see them, connect, and always speak directly to them, because just because they do not speak does not mean they are incompetent.

Most first visits are about building trust, not making demands. And every now and then, one of my new nonverbal autism kiddos will walk right up to me, climb into my lap, and settle in. ❤️

That’s communication at its purest “I trust you.”

That kind of trust can’t be taught, it’s built through patience, presence, understanding, and love. 💙

🥱
Reagan slept well for her first year of life and then not again until she was probably about 13-14yrs old.

She wouldn’t go to sleep until late, and if she caught even a 5-minute nap during the day, we were guaranteed to be up until 2 a.m. On the nights she fell asleep reasonably early, she’d wake at 2–3 a.m. ready to start the day, not going back to sleep until 5 or 6a, right before school.

For most of those years, I “co-slept” with her. (If you can even call it sleep). I worried about her getting up without me hearing and that was terrifying with her having almost no safety awareness. It was exhausting, but what other option was there? I tried using a baby monitor but she would unplug them before she fell asleep or I would listen so hard while in my own bed it seemed more restful to just be in hers. I tried over an over the counter sleep supplement briefly but it would only help her fall asleep, not stay asleep.

She still likes to stay up late but she is a teenager. She gets up really well in the morning and has always been in great mood when awakened from sleep. I, on the other hand, am still a light sleeper and overall I don’t sleep well. I’m also not quite as delightful when I have to get up. 😅

And now after all those nights together-on the rare occasion I do try to lay down with her for a snuggle, I usually get told: “all done mom” or “bye-bye.” 😢 …really kid? 🤣
