You may be surprised to hear that something that sounds as attractive as a “right-to-work” law has severe negative impacts on the strength and stability of our unions.

Wisconsin’s version of this law, adopted in 2015, allows private employees to choose whether or not they wish to pay union dues. Unions are required by federal law to represent all employees in a workplace, not just paying members. This means that non-paying employees can reap the benefits of union representation while leaving their coworkers to pick up the load of financial support. This undermines the efficacy of our unions and leads to lower participation overall.

That is why I signed onto SB-519 this past session, which sought to repeal these terms. Although it may seem counterintuitive, repealing these parts of our “right-to-work” law will actually support workers by bolstering union membership and bargaining power.
