I want to tell you a little bit about Rachel! She joined Recursive on February 3rd, 2015 and has never cancelled or put her membership on hold and has attended 990 classes (as of today)! She doesn't love the spotlight, but as Recursive comes to an end, I needed to give Rachel some recognition for her years of loyalty! Thank you Rachel - we will miss you a ton!

Why did you choose Recursive?
The requirement to take Foundations was a big selling point for me. I'm extra bendy and injury prone, so making sure that I could complete the movements with good form was a priority. The first time the barbell came out, I was hooked.

What is your favorite thing about working out at Recursive?
Willow! I love that I just have to show up and do the workout. I also love that the coaches talk about scaling options every single time, so everyone can do the workout in the way that's best for them that day. I also unexpectedly fell in love with weightlifting!

How has Recursive changed your life?
This is the happiest I've felt about/in my body probably ever. I discovered that it is indeed possible to go hard at the gym and not injure myself. Nowadays, when I look at myself I see all the things I can do, not just the way I look (oh hello biceps, you're looking mighty fine and strong today!). The confidence boost has been epic.

What advice do you have for people who are nervous to get started?
Give it a try! That's the other great thing about Foundations - you get 5 sessions to either catch the bug or decide it isn't for you, and you get a great workout either way. Don't fall for the hype about Crossfit - I expected big gym-bro energy, but that's not a thing here. Everyone is super chill, supportive, and non-judgmental.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I grew up on a tiny island in the Pacific, traveled the world as a Naval Officer, and landed happily in Madison around a decade ago. Nowadays, I live on the east side with my partner Jon, our cats Squishy and Felix, and Ziggy the dog. When I'm not at work or working out, you can usually find me on stage at Atlas Improv Company or doing various knitting, spinning, or otherwise yarn-related things....

What is your favorite thing about working out at Recursive?
I really like that I know the people there. Before starting I wouldn't have said that, but I used to belong to a triathlon gym in Chicago, and some of my fondest memories are connected to that place/people. Also, I knew almost nothing about CrossFit before signing up, so I've been really enjoying the workouts.

What is your biggest accomplishment since starting your commitment to a lifestyle change?
I am very much a CrossFit work in progress, so nothing is accomplished, but starting the journey of all the skills has been new and exciting. Learning to jump rope, row, do most of the olympic lifts, wall walks, anything having to do with the pull up bar-all new to me.

How has Recursive changed your life?
Recursive has reintroduced me to weight training and has me excited about it. The coaches have been amazing in teaching the movements correctly. I think most gyms can run you through a workout that makes you feel like you exercised, but learning how to develop this specific set of athletic skills safely and properly is pretty special.

What advice do you have for people who are nervous to get started?
Know that there are a lot of different workouts/skills/motions, but that makes it fun. There's not a lot of background you need because the coaches have been way above and beyond my expectations. They make sure you learn the CORRECT way to execute the workouts and motions. More generally, I'm coming to realize that we're all just trying to figure it out and do our best each day. Everyone wants to be around people having fun and succeeding, so therefore, people want you to succeed.
