This morning we thank Senator Tammy Baldwin and Team for visiting with us yesterday, and on the final day of National Black Maternal Health Week, to talk health and birth equity, and to catch up on the work of The Foundation for Black Women's Wellness. Senator Baldwin has been and remains a champion for women’s health and has been instrumental in supporting and proposing legislation— along with colleagues — to address and advance accountability and solutions to improve Black Maternal Health and the maternal mortality crisis — among other vital issues. We are proud to support her reintroduction, along with Congresswoman Gwen Moore, of the Perinatal Workforce Act, and salute her support and leadership on the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, a comprehensive legislative package aimed at ending maternal mortality disparities, particularly for Black and underserved mothers. It was our pleasure to share our progress and impacts and to talk about how we stay the course and advance our work and shared priorities in the current social and political climate. This visit energized us all. The work continues!

At the heart of this work are the voices of Black women (and men!) living it every day.

Conversations at the 6th Annual Black Maternal & Child Health Summit will uplift real stories, highlight ongoing challenges, and affirm the solutions that already exist within our communities.

Helping us center the lived experiences, wisdom, and advocacy of birth workers, mothers, and community leaders shaping the future of maternal health includes:
- DeAnna Tharpe, Doula Trainer Director
- Thonda Thompson, National Coalition for Healthy Black Families, Inc.
- Josh Liston-Zawadi, Melanated Daddy & Dad Doula
- Kristyl Thomas, DONA Trained Birth Doula
- Heather Schultz, Well Black Woman Doula Collective
- Micaela Berry-Smith, The Foundation for Black Women’s Wellness

Come ready to listen, reflect, and be moved to action.

It’s , and we are proud to introduce the leaders moving this work forward!

Meet the dedicated members of our Maternal & Child Health Team at the Foundation for Black Women’s Wellness who will serve as our hosts and facilitators for this year’s Black Maternal & Child Health Summit.

Together, they guide this special convening of partners through conversations that center Black mothers, families, and birth equity across Wisconsin.

We look forward to gathering under this year’s theme and call to action: ‘Now is the Time to Align for Black Maternal & Child Health in Wisconsin.’

Stay tuned for event updates and highlights next week as we welcome birthworkers and advocates from across Wisconsin to Madison – our capitol city – to envision the way forward – TOGETHER!

Long before modern healthcare systems, our ancestors carried the wisdom, intuition and practices that nurtured life, ensured safe births and held families with care and dignity .

That legacy lives on through each one of the Doulas on our team! We extend our deepest gratitude to our Well Black Doula Collective and we thank you for your partnership, advocacy and your sacred care of the mothers, fathers and families of this community.

In honor of International Black Doula Day, we celebrate that legacy and the life-saving work that continues to ensure Black women and families are supported, seen and heard! THANK YOU!
