Change of season and the scratchy throat lets you know it. As with any of these health challenges, early detection and quick intervention means shorter duration. One thing I've noticed is the body's receptivity to herbal therapy is greatest first thing in the morning, before digestion is complicated by foods and whatnot. That's why tulsi tea first thing in the morning has such a profound preventive influence. And if a pathogen is catching hold, first thing in the morning is a good time to loosen the grip. A few drops of goldenseal in water, gargled, will coat the throat membranes with antimicrobial isoquinoline alkaloids.
