It’s time to sign up for our next ImpactLife Blood Drive at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital - Madison!

Your generosity helps ensure blood products are available when our patients need them throughout the year, especially when they’re needed most. The holiday season is one such time. Blood donations often decline during the holidays due to busy schedules, holiday travel and seasonal illnesses, but the need remains the same. By giving blood with ImpactLife, you’ll provide a lifesaving resource used by patients right here at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Sign up to donate at our Thanksgiving week blood drive, which will be held in Conference Room 1 on Tuesday, November 25 between 8 am and 1 pm. It’ll be the easiest life (or lives!) you’ve ever saved.

Some fun facts about MRI technology:

🧲 The technology is named after Nikola Tesla. The strength of an MRI's magnetic field is measured in units of Tesla, in honor of the physicist who discovered the rotating magnetic field in 1882.

🧲 Magnets are thousands of times stronger than Earth's. A typical MRI scanner's magnetic field is up to 60,000 times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field. This is why all metallic objects must be kept far away from the machine to prevent them from becoming dangerous projectiles.

🧲 The magnets must stay super-cool. To maintain the superconducting state of the coils that produce their powerful magnetic field, the magnets in an MRI machine must be cooled to nearly absolute zero (-452°F or 4 Kelvin), typically using liquid helium.

🧲 An MRI is not a camera. While the result of an MRI is an image, it is not a photograph. It is a computer reconstruction of the signals emitted by hydrogen atoms in your body as they respond to the magnetic field and radio waves.

Our MRI team and all of our medical imaging professionals work behind the scenes and most of the time go unseen yet have the power to see right through you. During National Radiological Technology Week, thank you for all you do!

Respiratory therapists from across SSM Health in Wisconsin recently came together at the Center for Healthcare Education and Simulation (CHES) in Madison for an inspiring NICU-Peds Skills Fair!

With 26 RTs representing every health ministry in the region, this hands-on event focused on enhancing care for our tiniest and most vulnerable patients. From aligning workflows to standardizing equipment and strengthening teamwork, the fair was all about building consistency and collaboration across the board.

The energy was incredible, and the feedback? Overwhelmingly positive! RTs left feeling more connected, empowered, and ready to make an even bigger impact.

Planning is already underway for next year’s fair — and we’re excited to keep raising the bar for respiratory care!
