We Vote More Recess for Kids and Adults!
7 Reasons Why Kids Need Recess👇🏼
📝Breaks help us learn - Research suggests that intermittent learning with breaks and downtime is more efficient than concentrated stints. Plus, young childrens’ processing abilities are more limited than older children, making this style of learning even more appropriate.
⚡️Increased focus - One study of an urban school district with a no-recess policy found that among two fourth-grade classes, 43 children displayed improved focus and reduced restlessness on days with recess. 60% of the children showed increased engagement and decreased fidgeting on recess days.
☀️ Natural light - Getting outside is essential for producing Vitamin D - exposure to sunlight stimulates the pineal gland, essential for regulating our biological clock, supporting the immune system, and improving mood. And, Vitamin D is linked with increased academic learning and productivity.
🧘♀️Reduced stress- According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children, unstructured play can help alleviate stress. Further, unstructured play outside can help kids develop autonomy, embrace freedom, and explore self-direction.
❤️Social skills - Recess is an important time for socialization and genuine communication, as over-structured routines can sometimes limit kids’ chances for natural social development.
🏃🏽♀️Physical activity - Outdoor play helps kids stay physically healthy, develop physical skills, and simply feel the joy of movement. Research indicates that active school hours often lead to continued physical activity at home, underscoring the importance of incorporating physical activity during the school day.
🧠Brain health - Physical activity is shown to enhance the brain’s performance by improving blood vessel capacity and optimizing oxygen and nutrient delivery. Research demonstrates that physically active students experience better academic performance, higher test scores, and improved attitudes toward school.
