What is lymphedema as it relates to Breast Cancer?

During breast cancer surgery (mastectomy or lumpectomy), some of the lymph nodes in your underarm (axillary lymph nodes) may be removed and checked for cancer.

When axillary lymph nodes are removed during breast surgery (with sentinel node biopsy or axillary dissection) or are treated with radiation therapy, some of the lymph vessels can become blocked. This may prevent lymph fluid from leaving the tissue below the area where the lymph nodes were removed.

Lymphedema occurs when lymph fluid builds up in your arm, causing it to swell (edema). Lymphedema can also occur in your hand, fingers, chest/breast or back.

The swelling may be so slight it’s barely seen or felt. Or it may be so great your arm or other affected area grows very large. Having one arm larger than the other (or swelling in another area), even if the change is small, can be distressing.

In severe cases, lymphedema can cause pain and limit movement.

What Is Cellulitis?
Cellulitis is a sudden, non contagious infection of the skin, characterised by redness, swelling and heat, with associated pain and tenderness. It is usually accompanied by fever, nausea/vomiting and a feeling of generally being unwell. People with lymphoedema are particularly susceptible to cellulitis because the lymphatic system is damaged or overloaded and does not function adequately to fight infection. Upon diagnosis, your doctor will identify which stage best characterizes your lymphedema and diagnose treatment accordingly. Depending on how the swelling has progressed, your doctor will identify the following stages:

Stage 1: Abnormal flow in the lymphatic system. No signs or symptoms

Stage 2: Accumulation of fluid with swelling. Swelling resolves with elevation. Pressing on the area may leave a dent

Stage 3: Permanent swelling that does not resolve with elevation. Pressing on the area no longer leaves a dent. Changes in the skin with scarring and thickening

Stage 4: Elephantiasis (large deformed limb), skin thickening with “wart-like” growth and extensive scarring

Swelling, most often in an arm or leg, caused by a lymphatic system blockage.
Lymphedema is swelling that generally occurs in an arm or leg, but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck and ge****ls. The condition is caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system, part of the immune and circulatory systems. Lymphedema is most commonly caused by lymph node removal or damage due to cancer treatment.

Lymphedema symptoms typically include swelling of part or all of the arm or leg, including fingers and toes. A feeling of heaviness or tightness and a loss of range of motion in the arm or leg also are common symptoms.

Treatment focuses on reducing the swelling and preventing complications. Exercise, wrapping, massage and compression can help. Call today for an appointment for an evaluation. 423-545-9544

It is estimated that between 3 and 5 million patients in the United States suffer with lymphedema, with a significant portion developing the disease as a consequence of cancer or its treatment. In oncology, the most common causative factor for lymphedema development is the impaired or disrupted pattern of lymphatic flow through draining vessels and nodes, typically as a consequence of surgery and/or radiation. Radiation and surgical excision of lymph nodes are two of the top three highest risk factors for lymphedema development, along with obesity.
