Shovel Smart!

Shoveling heavy, wet snow can cause back injuries and heart attacks if you are not cautious. Don't overexert yourself!

Dress warmly, making sure to cover your head, fingers and toes.

Stay hydrated but avoid heavy meals right before or after shoveling.

Move only small amounts of snow with each pass of the shovel. Push, don't lift!

Take frequent breaks and stop if you begin to feel exhausted.

National Maternal Health Awareness Day is dedicated to bringing attention to unique health struggles faced by mothers, both physical and mental.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 80% of maternal deaths are considered preventable. One in seven women experience postpartum depression and many do not seek treatment. Women of color, especially Black women, face higher than average mortality rates.

Physical warning signs like headaches, chest pains and heavy bleeding after delivery are often ignored as normal post-pregnancy symptoms and go unaddressed. Women feel alone and think they should just power through, but mental health is part of maternal health and not a sign of failure or weakness. One of the most important things a mother can do is advocate for herself and build a strong support system both before and after delivery. This can reduce stress and even lower complications.

Your voice matters and speaking up in search of answers could make all the difference!

This week's Employee Spotlight is Maddie Hagan, Occupational Therapist.

I started at Baptist Health Deaconess in December of 2023 as an Occupational Therapist. In my role, I assist with patients improving their independence in daily activities such as bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, and toileting, improving activity tolerance, endurance, balance, and strengthening.

I find my work especially rewarding when I see patients return to their prior level of function and regain confidence in abilities they once took for granted. Helping patients build strength, improve activity tolerance, and achieve greater independence is what motivates me each day.

I have had the opportunity to work on the Acute Rehab floor, Continue Care, and other units including 3W, 3E and 4W, as well as the Behavioral Health unit. I truly enjoy collaborating with my co-workers in the rehabilitation department and working together to help patients progress towards their goals.

Thanks, Maddie for being part of our team!

We know our team provides excellent care. Don't take our word for it. Read what our patients had to say about their recent experiences at Baptist Health Deaconess!

• Dr. Quinn Schroeder has been extremely helpful and right on point every appointment. He called me himself the morning after my surgery!!! He cares; he has helped me understand what to expect. He is a great doctor. I like that he has seen me at every visit, even just to stop in to see if everything is going well. I would definitely recommend him!!
• Appreciate the way Ashley Utley, APRN listens to my concerns, takes them seriously, and strives to give me the best care. She digs deep into my history and test results to make sure nothing is missed and always asks me for any needs in medications or health advice. Couldn't ask for more.
• The receptionist, the physician assistant, and the doctor were all kind, and I felt they all were professional and knowledgeable. Great group of people that I interacted with. The waiting room was inviting and clean. The staff was very professional and kind. The staff listened to my concerns. The staff was knowledgeable and I felt comfortable with each staff member. They each considered me as if they were family members. I appreciate their kindness and support. I will recommend BHD Powderly to others.
• Dr. Quinn Schroeder has been wonderful through this whole process of having surgery. He took the time to explain everything in detail. When I was not healing as fast as I should have, he made certain that he saw me at each visit to check on my progress. Always so patient and always so kind. I saw Hannah the APRN on my last post op until I go back in a month to be discharged. I would highly recommend this podiatry team. Great service and great outcome!
• We loved Dr. Bansal so much! He has great bed side manor, very gentle with our situation. The clerk who checked us in was great; the nurse was also great and of course the doctor.
• Very thankful to have found Callie Wells, APRN. She has been a God send to our family, and we look forward to working with her each and every time. She has put us at ease with his transition, when it could have been extremely challenging and stressful. Instead, it has been a seamless transition, and he is handling it well.
• Mckenzie Young, APRN has always been very informative and answered all my questions. She really seems to care. I don't really like going to doctors but for the last 2 years she has helped with my worrying. Dr. Fellows and Mckenzie and the whole staff were great, A+
• My mother had a wonderful visit. She said she was well taken care of and everyone on her team was super nice. She said Dr. Chapman was very kind to her, and he held her hand while they started her IV.
• I would like to recognize Linda in housekeeping. She kept my room very clean. She was very polite and she did a very good job down in the ER.
• Dr. Fralish is a very caring and knowledgeable physician. He takes a lot of time to explain what is going on, what he is doing and why he is doing it. He is very personable. He is an excellent physician and has a great personality. Also, his nurse, Gabriella, who is thorough, courteous, quite personable, and listens. Also, quite competent as well.
• Dr. McClure is absolutely amazing and a perfect urgent care physician. He explains what you need to know now, with the emergent issue, but what to look for as things progress. I couldn't have been more impressed with his care.
• Dr. Perez and her medical assistant were amazing and did everything they could to help me feel comfortable. Dr. Perez was very thorough and informative and made me feel heard and respected. Both Dr. Perez and the medical assistant did a fantastic job, and I would recommend them both to anyone.
• Dr. Dodds did a great job in surgery and was thorough in the instructions pertaining to my recovery. This made my recovery smooth and troublesome free.
• I enjoyed just being there. Everyone was really, really nice. Ms. Bree checked me in. She was very professional. The two ladies that took my blood pressure and my vitals, they were very, very nice. They made me at ease. And Jon Schermerhorn, APRN, he was fantastic. Thank you.
• The receptionist was very pleasant, professional, and helpful. The nurse who saw me before Dr. Fellows is very welcoming and comforting and does her job well. And Dr. Fellows makes me feel very secure and confident with my care from him.
• All the nurses and doctors there at wound care are good people. I mean, I sort of look forward to going to this now. All the doctors I go to, I love coming there because it's a pleasant experience. Whereas some other doctors I go to, it isn't. Just about all your nurses and doctors have been nothing but kind and funny and it's a good place to come to. Thank you.

A family was ready to take their baby home, but the car seat available to them was beyond its expiration date and missing inserts necessary to safely hold their small baby. Another had come to the Emergency Department following a car crash, leaving their car seat no longer usable. Some simply cannot afford the high cost of a new car seat after the birth of a child.

At Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville, we’re able to provide any family in need with a new car seat, ensuring they are able to safely transport their baby home from our hospital. This program is made possible through the generous support of our partners at Happy Seats, and efforts like their upcoming Rock A Bye Baby fundraising event.

Buy your tickets today for a fun evening supporting a cause that’s meaningful for families in our community. Additional information is available on the page of Hopkins County Happy Feet.
