This week's Employee Spotlight is Kayla Faulk, Phlebotomist in Women’s Care Lab.

I joined Baptist Health Deaconess in March of 2015 as a phlebotomist. I enjoy meeting patients and making friends along the way. I always wanted to have a career in healthcare, and the lab was just the fit for me.

Thank you, Kayla for being part of our team!

Rural communities are wonderful places to live and work, which is why nearly one in five Americans call them home. These small towns and farming communities are places where neighbors know each other, listen to each other, respect each other and work together to benefit the greater good. These communities provide the rest of the country with a wealth of services and commodities, and they are an economic engine.

These rural communities also have unique healthcare needs. Today more than ever, rural communities must address accessibility issues, a lack of healthcare providers, the needs of an aging population suffering from a greater number of chronic conditions, and larger percentages of un- and underinsured citizens. And rural hospitals – which are often the economic foundation of their communities in addition to being the primary providers of care – struggle daily as declining reimbursement rates and disproportionate funding levels make it challenging to serve their residents.

That is why we celebrate National Rural Health Day. First and foremost, National Rural Health Day is an opportunity to “Celebrate the Power of Rural” by honoring the selfless, community-minded, “can do” spirit that prevails in rural America. But it also gives us a chance to bring to light the unique healthcare challenges that rural citizens face.

We know there is work to be done, but we also believe there is plenty to celebrate!

Cancer: it’s a diagnosis that brings with it fear and worry, with a million different concerns swirling all at the same time.

When Raiden Arnold’s parents found out their 2-year-old had been diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, his pediatrician contacted the Baptist Health Deaconess Foundation to try to ease one of those worries. Since June, the Foundation has been assisting Raiden’s family with travel costs to and from Vanderbilt’s Pediatric Cancer Center, easing the burden so that they can focus on getting their little boy the care he needs.

Donations to our Patient Assistance Fund help real people in our community, ensuring that our friends and neighbors can have a happier and healthier future.

Church Group Stitches More Than 100 Quilts for Patients at Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center

Sometimes a simple item can carry more meaning than is visible to the naked eye – and to patients at the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center, the quilts they receive are more than just your average quilt. The fabric is carefully selected, every stitch is made with a purpose, and members of the Greater Lighthouse Church’s quilt ministry group pray over each comfort quilt before delivering them to the Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville Foundation.

When members of the quilt ministry group connected with the BHDM Foundation early in 2025, no one involved knew the impact this program would have in less than a year – and now, that labor of love and hope has touched more than 100 lives in our community.

“Our group makes these quilts as a way to bring encouragement and hope to the hurting, and we have been able to bless so many more people than we could have ever imagined,” says Ruth Ann Travis, a member of Greater Lighthouse Church’s quilt ministry. “We receive a blessing ourselves when we have blessed others.”

Through the Chemo Buddies program, volunteers in the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center serve as a source of support through patients’ journeys, with each patient receiving a care package, including a comfort quilt, upon arrival for their first treatment. These quilts provide more than warmth during treatments – they also cover each recipient in prayer from friends, family, and good-hearted strangers in their own community.

“Cancer is very frightening and can be isolating,” says Betty Williamson, a volunteer with the Chemo Buddies program. “I haven’t had a patient who wasn’t extremely appreciative of their comfort quilt. Some of them are moved to tears to know that there are people they don’t even know who are thinking about and praying for them.”

Women supporting other women – that’s what Lawna Ferrell and Tara Rorer say was their mission when they organized their inaugural Breast Cancer Awareness Slow Pitch Softball Tournament in October. The event, which included teams from across the region and even out-of-state, raised $1,500 in its first year that will directly benefit breast cancer patients at the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center.

Thank you to Lawna and Tara for organizing this event, as well as all the teams who came together in support of such a wonderful cause.

Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville earned an ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for Fall 2025! The Leapfrog Group is an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. They assign an A, B, C, D or F grade to general hospitals across the country using evidence-based measures of patient safety focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries, and infections.

“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Baptist Health Deaconess made a true commitment to put patient safety first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“We are committed to patient safety every day for every patient,” said Christy Littrell, chief nursing officer at Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville. “Our entire team works diligently to ensure safety standards are met and that we remain focused on providing safe, quality healthcare for our community. We are excited to learn that we have received an ‘A’ rating for both spring and fall of 2025.”

This week's Employee Spotlight is Christy Whitaker, Ultrasound Tech in Women’s Care.

I am an OB/GYN Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonographer at the Women's Center. I have been a part of Baptist Health Deaconess since October 2011. I started my career right out of high school in radiology in 1999. A few months later, I got my certification in mammography and started doing ultrasound. Since then, I have had the pleasure and experience of working with The Perinatal Group, MFM out of Clarksville and the Baptist Health Maternal Fetal Medicine group out of Lexington. As difficult and stressful as it was learning high risk fetal ultrasound, it has definitely made me the sonographer I am today!

I love my job and what I get to do every day because I love getting to see and be a part of a new mom and her baby. As a sonographer, I look at and take images of baby and mom to make sure both are healthy throughout the pregnancy. There is just something special about seeing God’s creation as it grows and develops. The human body is just AMAZING, and I am so BLESSED to be a part of it! I am so thankful to Baptist Health Deaconess for letting me be a small part of our community's healthcare and doing what I love!!

I have been married to my husband, Wayne, for 24 years and the Lord has blessed us with two children, Grace-22 and Braden-18. I am very active in my church and all it means to me. I could not have done any of this life without my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!! I give him ALL the glory in all my achievements!

Thank you, Christy for being part of our team!

We know our medical team provides exceptional care to each patient, but we still enjoy hearing about your patient experience directly from you.

• The best experience I ever had at a doctor's office. From the front desk to his nurse and to Dr. Akins, I would like to commend them all for taking such great care of me. I walked out of that office feeling so well informed about my health and feeling like they really cared about me. Thank you, Baptist Health Deaconess.

• Dr. McClure was wonderful, and he genuinely cared enough to explain things in great detail which I definitely appreciated!! The entire staff was great from the receptionist to the doctor. I really appreciated how respectful they all were. Please recognize Dr. McClure and Ashlie Cunningham...I could not have asked for better care anywhere!!

• Amy, the receptionist is very nice. Tracy, the MA does a wonderful job, and she is very personable and very sweet. She is a hard worker and always has a smile and a kind word. Jessica Anderson-Brown takes time to explain everything and make sure you are comfortable. A very lovely office experience and staff.

• Dr. Schroeder was so kind and gentle with my son. He made him feel so comfortable when he was a little nervous before his appointment. The MA, Madeline, was also super kind and patient. We had a great experience and will recommend to others! :)

• Dr. Wing's diagnosis explained the reason for my medical condition that she was very knowledgeable about!! She spent quality time with me explaining my condition. I will tell my friends about her.

• I will always recommend Jamee Crick. She is very attentive, grounded and really listens to my concerns & health care goals. I am thankful for her and her guidance during this season of my healthcare.

• Natalie, the medical assistant, was extremely helpful to me when we were talking about my medication list and when we were going over other medication information. And when I saw Dr. Chang-Figueroa, he was extremely informative, and he was extremely caring about my health and my health issues. He wanted to be sure that I was getting the optimum care from him as possible. And I just want to highly recommend Dr. Chang-Figueroa because he truly cares about all his patients, and I really appreciate him.

• I've been going to Dr. Bandy for many years, and he has always listened to me and treated me with respect. He is definitely an asset to your company. Nurses and front staff are amazing as well.

• My visit was following a hospital stay. I saw Erin in the hospital. And then again, after my hospital visit, she was very caring and attentive to my needs and my concerns. I would definitely recommend her. She was a very good provider.

• Dr. Bansal was kind, polite, patient and a very active listener. He WANTS to help people get out of pain and, as a patient, I could tell. He has already helped with my pain, and we are just getting started. His calm demeanor is helpful when I am feeling anxious. His referral coordinator was so helpful in getting my injection approved. The whole office was helpful, kind and caring. Misty Alexander, the referral coordinator, worked hard to get an approval for my injection. She got it the SAME DAY. I was able to get injections the NEXT day. She was on top of it!
