Seven Justice-Involved Veterans Granted a 2nd Chance

Demonstrating a practical and effective approach to bettering the lives of local veterans, Monroe County Veterans Court and Vet to Vet Tennessee award the progress of seven individuals last month, a celebratory ceremony at the Monroe County Justice Center recognizing growth and healing through mentorship and therapy-centered recovery, Judge Dwaine Thomas returning a “debt of honor” to members of the military by granting a second chance and clean slate to Brock Gordley (Army), Sam McCosh (Marine Corps), James McLean (Air Force), Joseph Newton (Navy), Grace Ritner (Navy), Casey McAlister (Navy), and Mark Stacey (Navy).

Active for more than a decade, Monroe County Veterans Court has a 6% recidivism rate; 94% of participants never return to the judicial system. Vet to Vet Tennessee reminds veterans, “You’re worth it, You’re Worth fighting for.”

We are pleased to announce that St. Francis Episcopal Church is the newest Veteran and Military-Friendly Congregation member to the VMFC network.

Thank you, Father Lawrence Recla, for joining our mission—blessings of good health.

St. Francis is a strong supporter of our military, our law enforcement, and our emergency service providers. Every Sunday in our Prayers of the People, we corporately pray for our military at home and abroad. On the Feast of St. Michael and All Saints, we invite local LEOs and EMS to attend and be recognized and prayed over.

A dear friend of our congregation is the former Canon to the Ordinary for Episcopal Military and Federal Ministries, the Rev. Dr. Wollam Jensen. Rev. Dr. Jensen has attended services at St. Francis and is an old friend of our Priest in Charge.

Fr. Recla, our Priest in Charge, served as the last chaplain at the Ground Zero Morgue and has served as a chaplain for law enforcement agencies around the country. Fr. Recla, our assisting priest, Rev. Chapman, and our deacon, Rev. House, have all conducted services at Bushnell National Cemetery for Episcopal, Lutheran, and non-denominational internments on a regular basis, upon request by families whose loved ones are laid to rest there.

We are located about 25 minutes from The Villages, Florida, which hosts the largest American Legion Post in the country. Although we are an older, relatively small parish, we have a huge heart for the military and our veterans. We would be proud to be listed as a Military Friendly Congregation.

“Love for God, His Country, and His Family”
Sweetwater Korean War Veteran Charlie Cassady.

A lifelong Sweetwater resident was posthumously declared an Ambassador for Peace on Wednesday in recognition of his service from 1952 to 1954 in the Korean War.

Lola Cassady accepted the honor on behalf of her husband, Charlie Boyd Cassady. Mr. Cassady passed in 2019. Mrs. Cassady described her husband as a man of deep conviction with endless love for God, his country, and his family.

“He was always happy and always had a smile,” she said, receiving a medal from the government of South Korea and words of gratitude at the Monroe County Veterans Service Center in downtown Madisonville. “His nickname was Hop-a-Long Cassady.”

Honors for Mr. Cassady were presented by Veterans Service Officer Andy Boyd, Monroe County Mayor Mitch Ingram, and Vet to Vet Tennessee president Randall Scott.

The Republic of Korea Ambassador for Peace Medal is a special token of appreciation granted to veterans of the Korean War. Vet to Vet T

Tennessee co-founder Ed Junod said the medal conveyed the South Korean people’s lasting admiration for America and its military. “This medal shows how much the Korean government loves you for your husband’s service,” he said.

Mr. Cassady joined the Army on August 26, 1952. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on June 23, 1954. As a member of the armed forces, Cassady earned a Korean Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

In private life, Cassady was a pastor, and he was employed for 54 years as a molder at Vestal Manufacturing.

Joining Mrs. Cassady in accepting their father’s decoration were daughter Teresa Mashburn and son Tim Cassady. “Thank you to everyone here today,” Mrs. Cassady said. “Every day I live, I find something he’s done. I thank God for having a husband like I had. Special thanks to Andy Boyd and each of you for making this day so wonderful for us.”

HEAL MORAL INJURY, RESTORE HOPE.
“My recent experience on a retreat sponsored by the American Warriors Association was highly positive. The itinerary included horseback riding, hiking, and
valuable opportunities for camaraderie with fellow veterans. The setting was the expansive 36,000-acre Rankin Ranch, which provided a memorable backdrop for the activities. I wholeheartedly recommend these faith-based retreats to anyone who can participate. The central theme of the retreat was the importance of faith in God.” Bob McAndrew, Vet to Vet Tennessee Repairs for Heroes Chairman.

We recommend you visit the America Warrior Association website - https://www.awa-usa.org/

AWA empowers service members, veterans, first responders and their families to overcome moral injury through faith-based healing, research-driven solutions, and leadership development. Together, we build resilience and restore hope for America’s heroes. The program is FREE!

Another example of faith being fundamental foundation for healing and recovery. God bless America.
