That’s a six year old. See how his neck is just an extension of his deep chest. These are a no brainer.

There’s an old one I saw today. That’s my oldest son on one of our horseback hunts in SC about 25 years ago.

So a guy comes on here today and says this AL buck can very likely be a 170 in a few years. Says he sees it quite often. Darn! I’m going to have to redo most of my seminar slides.

Our next seminar will be Saturday March 7th at the civic center in Thomasville, AL. This will be a one day seminar because talking for two 9 hour days is getting to be a little too much. The doors will open at 7 A.M. and we will start at 8 A.M.. The morning will be all about soils, planting methods, food plot components and herbicides. We will break for lunch from 12:00 to 1:00. Snacks and water will be provided, but lunch is on your own. The afternoon will be all about creating good habitat and then we will finish up with supplemental feeds and feeding. There will be plenty of time for questions when we are done. The Thomasville Civic Center has very comfortable gradually elevated seating with a large screen for slides and a great sound system. The cost will be $350 and that comes out to about $35 per hour for forty years of knowledge. For tickets you can make a check out to Mark Buxton SWHS and mail it to Mark Buxton SWHS P.O. Box 186 Thomaston, AL 36783. My wife will mail your ticket to you. Make sure you put a note with your check for the name you want on the ticket as well as the address where you want them to be sent. We reserve the right to refuse a ticket to anyone if we feel it is necessary. If you have any questions just ask.

This will cause a stir, but all three of these bucks are scheduled to be removed as management bucks. If you’ve been to my recent seminars where I show the graph of bucks over time you will get it. Could one of them explode next year? It’s possible, but there’s an 80 - 90 percent chance they won’t knowing nutrition was not a limiting factor. Very few things in deer management are 100 percent so you have to go with the averages and not the extremes. I want only the bucks with the best potential in the upper age classes. Again, you can’t blame a buck for lack of antler when nutrition was an obvious limiting factor. Sweet gum leaves and pine needles are not high quality nutrition.

Don’t forget the Safford Trading Company shopping spree deer contest with the Alabama deer season opening this weekend. None of it is based on size or weight. For every buck or doe you bring to the store your name will go in the drawing. The more deer you bring the more times your name goes in.
