The "Secret Sauce" is in Your Inbox! 📧👅❤️

Why is it that some people see massive changes in their sleep and breathing, while others feel like they’re just "going through the motions"?

The difference is Neuromuscular Re-education.

In today’s newsletter, we’re pulling back the curtain on the science of how we actually re-wire the brain to make "The Spot" your tongue’s permanent home. It’s not about how hard you exercise; it’s about how you program your habits.

In today’s edition:
💡 The 3 Stages of Habit Mastery (Are you at the 'Gold Medal' level yet?)
💡 Why consistency beats intensity every single time.
💡 A special "Habit Audit" for our Functional Smile graduates!

Missed the email? If you aren't on our list yet, you’re missing the weekly roadmap to better breathing and a more functional smile. Drop the word “HABIT” in the comments, and I’ll send you the link to join our community!

Did you know that your tongue has a memory? 🧠👅

Ever wonder why you can ride a bike after years of not touching one? That’s muscle memory. And guess what? Your tongue has it too!

For most of our clients, the tongue has "memorized" a low resting position—resting on the floor of the mouth or pushing against the teeth. This isn't just a "bad habit"; it’s a deeply ingrained neuromuscular pattern.

How do we change it? In Myofunctional Therapy, we aren't just doing exercises. We are performing Neuromuscular Re-education. We are sending new signals from the brain to the tongue to overwrite the old, dysfunctional blueprint.

The 3 Stages of Your Journey:
1️⃣ Thinking about it: You have to manually move your tongue to "The Spot."
2️⃣ Catching it: You realize it fell down, and you quickly put it back.
3️⃣ Living it: You wake up, and it’s already there.

It takes roughly 21 to 60+ days to build a new neural pathway. If you’re in the "thinking about it" stage, don't give up! Every time you reset your posture, you’re literally rewiring your brain.

Check-in: Where is your tongue right now? If it’s not on the roof of your mouth, consider this your "Brain Reset" for the day. 👅❤️

Why “Knowing” Isn’t Enough: The Science of Myo-Habits

By now, you know where your tongue should live. You know the benefits for your heart, your airway, and your sleep. But knowing "The Spot" exists and actually living there 24/7 are two very different things!

Welcome to the world of Neuromuscular Re-education. 🧠👅

Myofunctional therapy isn’t just about doing "tongue exercises"—it’s about re-wiring the connection between your brain and your mouth. For years, your muscles may have been programmed to stay low, mouth open, and swallow incorrectly. To change that, we have to create new neural pathways.

How we make it stick: 1️⃣ Awareness: Catching yourself when your tongue "falls" from its home. 2️⃣ Repetition: Performing specific movements until they become a reflex. 3️⃣ Consistency: Training the muscles until the "new" way becomes the "only" way.

Think of it like learning to drive a manual car. At first, you have to think about every shift. Eventually, you just drive. Our goal at Functional Smile is to get your tongue into "Auto-Pilot" mode—suctioned to the roof of your mouth, even when you’re deep in sleep.

Pro-Tip: Don’t wait for "practice time." Practice while you’re checking emails, folding laundry, or standing in line. Those small moments are where the real habit is built!

Is your tongue at home right now? Let’s finish February strong!

The "Form Follows Function"

A smile is more than just straight teeth. 🦷✨

We often look at "Before" photos and see crowded teeth or a narrow arch. But at My Functional Smile, we see the Functional Red Flags behind them—like mouth breathing, low tongue posture, or a narrow airway.

The "After" isn't just about the aesthetics: ✅ It’s about a tongue that finally has room to rest on the roof of the mouth. ✅ It’s about lips that can close effortlessly (no more open-mouth rest!). ✅ It’s about a clearer airway and better sleep.

When we fix the function, the beautiful smile follows naturally.

Your Heart Loves Your Tongue Posture 👅❤️

It’s Heart Month! But while most people are focused on cardio and cholesterol, we’re looking at a different vital connection: The Heart-Airway Link.

Did you know that where your tongue rests right now affects how hard your heart has to work?

Here is the science: When your tongue rests on the floor of your mouth (low tongue posture), it is much more likely to slide back into your airway during sleep. When your airway narrows, your oxygen levels dip. Your brain then sends a "panic" signal to your heart to pump faster and harder to keep your system oxygenated.

This chronic nighttime "fight or flight" mode can lead to: ✅ Increased heart rate ✅ Elevated blood pressure ✅ Strained cardiovascular health ✅ Waking up feeling exhausted (even after 8 hours!)

By training your tongue to stay suctioned to the roof of the mouth (The Spot), you are physically keeping your airway open. This allows your heart to stay in "Rest & Digest" mode all night long.

The Bottom Line: A toned tongue is a gift to your heart. It’s the difference between your heart working overtime all night or getting the restorative break it deserves.

Are you ready to give your heart a hand? Check your posture right now: Lips sealed, tongue up, breathing through your nose. Your heart will thank you! 👅❤️

Can you see the "𝗠𝘆𝗼-𝗚𝗹𝗼𝘄"? ✨ Beyond the dental alignment, look at the brightness in the eyes and the relaxed facial muscles in the "after." Improved tongue posture often leads to better sleep quality and oxygen intake. We love seeing our patients go from tired mouth-breathers to energized nasal-breathers! 😴➡️☀️

𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲": 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽
When the tongue rests low in the mouth or the jaw drops open, the airway becomes partially obstructed. The body has to work harder to breathe, which often leads to:

Micro-Arousals: The brain "wakes up" just enough to signal the body to breathe, preventing deep, restorative REM sleep.

Venous Pooling: Those "dark circles" under the eyes (allergic shiners) are often caused by poor drainage and lack of oxygenated blood flow.

Venous Congestion: A persistent "heavy" look to the face due to chronic mouth breathing.

The "After": The Myo-Glow
Once a patient masters a palatal tongue rest and nasal breathing, the airway stays open and stable during sleep. The changes we see in "after" photos aren't just dental; they are physiological:

Bright Eyes: As the body gets consistent oxygen and reaches deep sleep cycles, the dark circles fade, and the eyes appear more "awake."

Relaxed Facial Tone: The facial muscles no longer look "strained" from trying to keep the airway open.

Improved Posture: You’ll often see the head move back over the shoulders rather than leaning forward (the "Forward Head Posture" typical of mouth breathers).

Is your tongue “lazy”... or just trapped? 👅❤️

We often talk about the tongue’s true home—The Spot. But for many, getting the tongue to stay on the roof of the mouth feels like an impossible uphill battle. If you’ve been struggling to maintain proper tongue posture, the issue might not be your willpower. It might be a physical restriction.

Ankyloglossia (commonly known as a tongue tie) happens when the tissue under the tongue is too tight, short, or thick. This tethered tissue acts like a "short leash," physically preventing the tongue from reaching the palate to create a healthy seal.

Why does this matter for your health? When the tongue is tied, it can’t do its job. Instead of supporting your airway and jaw structure, it stays low, often leading to: ❌ Chronic mouth breathing ❌ Narrowed airways & snoring ❌ Jaw tension and "tight" neck muscles ❌ Dysfunctional swallowing patterns

At Functional Smile, we don’t just look at the tongue; we look at the function. Myofunctional therapy is the key to prepping the muscles for success and ensuring that the tongue can finally move freely.

Red Flag Check: Try to touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth while opening your mouth as wide as you can. Does it feel stuck? Does the tip pull into a "heart" shape?

If your tongue feels tethered, it’s time to look deeper. Let’s unlock your function and help your tongue finally find its way home. 👅❤️

From mouth breathing to functional healing! 🌬️

Check out this amazing transformation.
It’s amazing what happens when the tongue finds its home on the palate.

Notice the change in the eyes and facial tension—this is what happens when the body finally moves from "survival breathing" to restorative rest. When we establish a proper lip seal and nasal breathing, we aren't just straightening teeth; we’re optimizing oxygen intake and brain health. Better sleep = a happier, healthier kiddo! ☀️

Here is why that "𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲r" looks so different:

The "Tired" Look (The Before): Chronic mouth breathers often have "allergic shiners" (dark circles under the eyes). This isn't necessarily from lack of sleep, but from venous pooling. Because the mid-face isn't being stimulated by proper nasal airflow and the tongue isn't supporting the upper jaw, blood flow in the facial veins can become sluggish.

The "Vibrant" Look (The After): Once the tongue "finds its home" on the palate, it acts as a natural internal support for the airway. This leads to higher oxygen saturation and more time spent in Deep Sleep and REM Sleep.

The Results: You’ll notice the "After" photos often show clearer skin, brighter eyes(covered for privacy of our patient), and a more "forward" and alert facial posture.
