Some things don’t leave the family. That’s what we were taught.
For so many Hispanic and Latinx households, mental health falls into that category. You don’t talk about depression, you push through it. You don’t name anxiety, you stay busy. Whatever you’re carrying, you carry quietly, because that’s what loyalty looks like.
But silence has a cost. Only 35% of Hispanic adults with mental illness receive treatment (NAMI). Depression goes untreated. Anxiety gets managed through work, religion, and silence. Trauma gets passed down to the next generation because it was never processed in this one.
You don’t have to keep carrying what was never yours to carry.
