What makes you feel safe?
Secure attachment is about closeness, but it goes beyond this. It’s about security - it’s about having an internal sense of connection to self and others even when we are not physically close. It’s the possession of a deep knowing that we are not alone in the world, even in the moments when we are by ourselves. . . physically alone.

But here’s the thing about attachment. Without repeated, intentional connection, we instinctively grasp for control – because that feels more predictable. It feels safer, too.

We grasp to control others and the environment around us in the absence of one of our most basic needs - genuine connection.

But real connection isn’t about who’s in charge. It’s founded on mutual trust, co-regulation, and the ability to hold space for ourselves and each other.

In my world today!!!

In the whirlwind of motherhood, it’s easy to lose yourself in the constant demands “Mommy, will you play with me?” “Mommy, will you push me on the swing?” “Mommy, can we read a book?” Their little voices echo with love and need, pulling at your heart even as you feel the weight of exhaustion. But the truth is, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

Slowing down and taking care of yourself isn’t selfish it’s essential. When you nurture your own well being, you become the mom your children need: patient, present, and emotionally available. Whether it’s stealing a few moments for quiet reflection, a walk in the fresh air, or simply a deep breath before answering the next "Mommy," these small acts of self-care can recharge your spirit.

Children crave connection more than perfection. They don’t need a mom who does everything; they need a mom who *sees* them. A mom who says, “I hear you, and I’m here.” By slowing down, you make space for the moments that truly matter the shared giggles on the swing, the cuddles during storytime, the wonder of being fully present in their world.

Take care of yourself, so you can show up with love, energy, and joy. Because in the end, it’s not about doing it all; it’s about showing them they are loved. And that starts with loving yourself enough to pause.

Anger, at its core, is often sadness wearing a mask. Anger is a protective response a way of shielding ourselves from the vulnerability of pain. When we’re angry, it feels powerful, defiant, and in control. But beneath the surface, it is often sadness crying out to be seen. That anger stems from disappointment, hurt, betrayal, or fear of losing what we love. It is sadness that has learned to roar instead of weep, trying desperately to keep us from feeling broken.

Understanding this reveals a profound truth: anger isn’t something to be ashamed of or feared, it’s something to be understood. If we peel back the layers of our anger and sit with its quieter, softer root our sadness we can learn to extend compassion toward ourselves. We can say, “I see you. I know why you hurt. And it’s okay to feel this way.”

Empathy toward ourselves in these moments is not indulgent it’s transformative. It allows us to break the cycle of reacting with blame or resentment, and instead respond with tenderness. When we honor the sadness behind our anger, we give ourselves permission to heal. And in doing so, we grow closer to the parts of ourselves we’ve too often ignored or silenced.

There’s a magic in the presence of an old horse, a creature who has seen many seasons and carries in its gentle gaze a well of wisdom and quiet strength. These horses move with a deliberate grace, each step taken with a wisdom earned through years of companionship and trust. Their eyes seem to hold secrets of resilience and patience, a testament to the lives they've touched and the love they've shared along the way.

For the humans lucky enough to share their journey, an old horse becomes both teacher and guide. They offer a kind of silent companionship that invites reflection, urging their humans to slow down, to breathe, to listen to the unspoken lessons they impart. In their presence, people feel seen, valued, and deeply understood perhaps for the first time. The connection with such a horse has a grounding effect, fostering a sense of calm and self-acceptance. Through the old horse's quiet strength, humans discover a deeper connection to themselves and a reminder of the enduring power of trust and compassion. In this bond, hearts soften, and healing begins, woven gently into every shared moment.

The human heart generates a powerful electromagnetic field that radiates outward, creating a magnetic wave that can be measured up to several feet away from the body. This wave plays a role in our emotional and physiological state, reflecting our feelings and influencing others around us. The heart’s magnetic field is not just an indicator of our physical health but also a medium through which we interact energetically with others, helping to create and strengthen interpersonal connections. This concept, backed by research in fields like HeartMath, suggests that our emotions are communicated in part through the heart's magnetic resonance.

In equine-assisted psychotherapy, the magnetic wave of the heart becomes especially significant. Horses, known for their sensitivity, are highly attuned to the subtle signals and emotional cues emitted by humans, including the magnetic heart wave. As prey animals, horses have evolved to detect even the faintest changes in energy and body language, enabling them to respond to people’s emotional states with remarkable intuition. This ability allows horses to feel human emotions, providing unique insights into one’s inner world. In therapeutic settings, this feedback can lead to a deeper understanding of self, making horses valuable partners in emotional healing and personal growth.

Through the heart’s magnetic connection, clients in equine-assisted psychotherapy experience a genuine bond with the horse, facilitating trust, empathy, and emotional regulation. As clients work with horses, the coherence between their heart and the horse’s heart fosters a non-verbal connection that encourages calmness, grounding, and self-awareness. This deep sense of attunement helps clients feel seen and understood, opening pathways to emotional breakthroughs and healing. The horse, responding to shifts in the client’s energy and heart rhythm, it helps guide by creating a therapeutic environment where heart-centered connection leads to profound personal transformation.

I would also like to give a big shout out to Bre Padgett! Equine Connections would not be a thing without her. She has been here since day one and has tremendously helped our business to grow with her profound skills!

***** Bre Padgett, LCMHC, LCAS, Level 1 NL, EMDR trained

When I started working in the mental health field, I often worked with clients who were “stuck”. It seemed as though traditional talk therapy just wasn’t helping, no matter how many different things we tried. A lot of families and clients

felt hopeless. Then… I saw the same clients interact with horses. That’s when I knew the transformative healing that could happen through equine therapy. I pursued my Level 1 Natural Lifemanship certification in 2021 and have been seeing clients through equine

therapy on a weekly basis every since.

I have certification in EMDR and specialize in addiction, trauma, attachment, relationship challenges, family work, PTSD, and depression/anxiety. Prior to joining the private practice world, I worked as a therapist at an adolescent recovery

treatment program and was an integral part of building the equine program.

I joined Rachel in 2021 who I consider to be my better half of our “dynamic duo” in equine work. We both are passionate and grateful for this work. I am honored and excited to be part of your growth & journey. Hope to see you on the farm!
