P*P ordered a HbA1c. It came back 5.3, completely normal. Doctor said everything looks fine.
I added a fasting insulin level.
It came back 44.5.
Standard lab range: up to 18-25
Optimal: under 5 (optimal > normal)
That’s nearly 9x above optimal — and it was completely missed.
Why does this matter?
Chronically elevated fasting insulin is one of the earliest warning signs of type 2 diabetes often appearing years before blood sugar levels even change. By the time your HbA1c flags there’s a problem your insulin has likely been elevated for years.
Catching it early is everything. This is preventable.
