P*P ordered a HbA1c. It came back 5.3, completely normal. Doctor said everything looks fine.
I added a fasting insulin level.
It came back 44.5.
Standard lab range: up to 18-25
Optimal: under 5 (optimal > normal)
That’s nearly 9x above optimal — and it was completely missed.

Why does this matter?

Zone 2 cardio is the type of cardio that burns fat, supports hormone balance, and actually helps your nervous system recover, instead of adding more stress to a body that’s already stressed.

Zone 2 cardio is low intensity, steady state exercise where you can hold a conversation without gasping. It’s not glamorous. But metabolically it’s one of the most powerful things you can do.

There are a few ways to find your Zone 2:
1️⃣ Heart rate formula (most common)
220 - your age x 60-70% =
For example age 40:
Step 1: 220 - 40 = 180 BPM
Step 2: Multiply by 60% for the low end 180 x 0.60 = 108 BPM
Step 3: Multiply by 70% for the high end 180 x 0.70 = 126 BPM
Your Zone 2 range at age 40 = 108 to 126 BPM

2️⃣ The talk test (easiest)
You should be able to hold a full conversation without gasping. If you can’t speak in complete sentences you’re working too hard. If you could sing a song you’re not working hard enough.

3️⃣ Use a smartwatch or fitness tracker. Most of these devices have a Zone 2 setting or heart rate zone display built in.

4️⃣ Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
On a scale of 1 to 10 — Zone 2 feels like a 4 to 5. Uncomfortable enough to know you’re working.

Pick whichever method works best for you the goal is the same regardless of how you find it.

Keep your heart rate within that range for 30 to 45 minutes.
