Receding hairlines can result from a variety of factors, with genetics being one of the most common. Our genetic makeup plays a major role—arguably the largest—in determining what happens to our hair over time. In addition to inherited traits, hormones, particularly DHT (dihydrotestosterone), have a direct impact on hairline recession. DHT causes hair follicles to shrink, eventually leading to the complete loss of hair in affected areas. This process often starts at the temples or crown and gradually works its way toward the center of the scalp.
Beyond genetics and hormones, lifestyle factors—including diet, stress management, and hair care practices—can also influence a receding hairline. While stress is often blamed for hair loss, it typically plays only a minor role. More significantly, an improper diet can prevent the scalp and hair from receiving essential nutrients, accelerating hairline recession.
