🛡️ Childhood Abuse Linked to Increased Health Risks in Adulthood
A study published in Child Maltreatment reveals that adults who experienced both physical and sexual abuse during childhood have approximately double the likelihood of developing various physical and mental health conditions compared to those without such histories.
Key Findings:
• Combined Abuse Impact: Individuals subjected to both physical and sexual abuse in childhood face significantly higher odds of conditions such as angina, arthritis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart attacks, depression, and disability.
• Sexual Abuse Alone: Those who experienced sexual abuse without physical abuse were found to be 55% to 90% more likely to encounter these health issues compared to their non-abused peers.
• Physical Abuse Alone: Individuals who endured only physical abuse had a 20% to 50% increased likelihood of developing these conditions.
Role of Protective Adults:
The study also highlights the mitigating effect of having a protective adult during childhood. Children who had a supportive adult in their lives exhibited less severe health outcomes in adulthood, suggesting the importance of nurturing relationships in buffering against the long-term impacts of abuse.
Conclusion:
These findings underscore the profound and lasting effects of childhood abuse on adult health. They emphasize the critical need for early intervention and the presence of supportive figures in a child’s environment to promote better long-term health outcomes.

📱 High Social Media Use Linked to Delusional Disorders
A recent study from Simon Fraser University has found a significant association between excessive social media use and psychiatric disorders involving delusions, such as narcissistic personality disorder and body dysmorphic disorder.
Key Findings:
• Prevalence of Delusional Disorders: The study systematically reviewed over 2,500 publications and identified that delusional disorders are the most prevalent psychiatric conditions related to high social media usage.
• Types of Disorders Identified:
• Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Characterized by delusions of superiority.
• Erotomania: Marked by delusions that a famous person is in love with the individual.
• Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD): Involves delusions about perceived physical flaws.
• Anorexia Nervosa: Associated with delusions concerning body size and weight.
Mechanisms:
The virtual environments created by social media platforms, combined with real-life social isolation, may foster and sustain delusional self-perceptions. Features of these platforms can enable self-presentation in self-promoting but inaccurate ways, lacking effective reality-checking mechanisms.
Implications:
While social media can offer positive benefits by fostering communities and a sense of togetherness, it may also negatively impact individuals prone to delusional thinking. The study suggests that social media platforms can create conditions where delusions are more easily generated and maintained.
Conclusion:
This research highlights the need for awareness of the potential mental health risks associated with high social media use. It underscores the importance of developing strategies to mitigate these risks, such as promoting digital literacy and encouraging balanced social media consumption.

🍔 Ultra-Processed Foods: Ubiquitous and Potentially Harmful
Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have become a staple in many diets, characterized by their convenience and extended shelf life. However, growing evidence links high consumption of these foods to various chronic health conditions.
What Are Ultra-Processed Foods?
UPFs undergo extensive industrial processing and often contain additives like high fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes, and preservatives to enhance flavor, appearance, and shelf stability. Common examples include packaged snacks, sugary drinks, ready-to-eat meals, and processed meats.
Health Risks Associated with UPFs:
• Obesity and Weight Gain: Diets high in UPFs are strongly associated with increased calorie intake and weight gain.
• Type 2 Diabetes: Regular consumption of UPFs has been linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
• Cardiovascular Diseases: High intake of UPFs is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
• Cancer: Some studies suggest a correlation between UPF consumption and certain types of cancer.
Recommendations:
While occasional consumption of UPFs can fit into a balanced diet, it’s advisable to prioritize whole, minimally processed foods. Incorporating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help mitigate the health risks associated with UPFs.
Conclusion:
Ultra-processed foods are prevalent in today’s food landscape, but mindful consumption is key. By understanding their potential health impacts and making informed dietary choices, individuals can better manage their overall health and well-being.

Equine-Assisted Interventions: What the Evidence Says 🐴
A comprehensive umbrella review analyzed 13 systematic reviews covering 79 studies involving equine-assisted interventions like hippotherapy and therapeutic riding across diverse populations—including children with cerebral palsy and autism, adults with physical and mental health challenges, and older adults .
Key highlights:
Physical benefits such as improved balance, coordination, and motor skills are well-supported—especially for neurological and mobility conditions.

Evidence for mental health gains (e.g., reduced anxiety, depression) is promising but still equivocal due to variability in study quality, small sample sizes, and methodological limitations ().

No harm to participants or horses was reported—underscoring safety when delivered by trained professionals .

This review suggests equine interventions hold significant therapeutic value, particularly for physical rehab—but more high‑quality research is needed to confirm mental health benefits. At Neurogenesis Center of Florida, we combine this experiential approach with evidence-based care to support whole-person wellbeing.

📱 Phubbing Linked to Reduced Empathy and Prosocial Behavior
A recent study published in Psychological Reports explores the impact of “phubbing”—the act of ignoring someone in favor of a smartphone—on empathy and prosocial intentions.
Key Findings:
• Empathy Reduction: Participants who recalled instances of phubbing reported slightly lower levels of empathy compared to those who remembered refraining from phone use during social interactions.
• Prosocial Intentions: Lower empathy was associated with a decreased willingness to engage in prosocial behaviors, such as helping or supporting others.
• Self-Control: Habitual phubbing tendencies were linked to slightly diminished self-control, which, in turn, correlated with reduced empathy and prosocial intentions.
Implications:
These findings suggest that frequent engagement in phubbing may subtly erode one’s capacity for empathy, potentially leading to less supportive and cooperative social behaviors.
Conclusion:
While the effects observed are modest, they highlight the importance of mindful smartphone use during face-to-face interactions to maintain empathy and social connectedness.

🧠 Long-Term Study Finds No Accelerated Cognitive Decline in Cannabis Users
A comprehensive 44-year study tracking over 5,000 men from young adulthood into their mid-60s has revealed that past cannabis use does not lead to accelerated cognitive decline. Surprisingly, participants who had used cannabis exhibited a slightly smaller decrease in cognitive function compared to non-users.
Key Findings:
• Cognitive Performance: Former cannabis users showed no significant cognitive deterioration over the decades.
• Age of Initiation: The study found no substantial differences in cognitive outcomes based on the age at which individuals began using cannabis.
• Frequency of Use: Even frequent cannabis use did not correlate with greater cognitive decline.
Implications:
These findings challenge previous assumptions about the long-term cognitive risks associated with cannabis use and suggest that moderate consumption may not be as detrimental to cognitive health as once believed.
Conclusion:
While further research is necessary to fully understand the long-term effects of cannabis, this study provides evidence that past use does not necessarily contribute to cognitive decline in later life.

🛏️ Sleep Patterns Significantly Influence Blood Sugar Stability
A recent study published in JAMA Network Open reveals that both the duration and timing of sleep have a profound impact on glycemic variability, a key factor in metabolic health and diabetes management.
Key Findings:
• Sleep Duration: Individuals with severe inadequate sleep (averaging 4.1 to 4.7 hours per night) exhibited a 2.87% increase in glycemic variability, indicating greater fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
• Sleep Timing: Those with persistent late sleep onset also experienced increased glycemic variability compared to early sleepers, suggesting that not just how long, but also when you sleep affects blood sugar stability.
Implications:
These findings underscore the importance of maintaining consistent and adequate sleep schedules as a potential strategy for improving blood sugar regulation and reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications.
Conclusion:
Prioritizing sufficient and timely sleep may serve as a simple yet effective approach to enhance metabolic health and manage blood sugar levels.
