Some factors that affect your metabolism are out of your control, like age or genetics.

But here are 5 things you CAN do to boost it: 💪🔥

1. Exercise more—build muscle to rev up your metabolism. 🏋️‍♂️

2. Move more—increase your NEAT by standing, walking, or fidgeting. 🚶‍♀️

3. Eat more protein—small metabolism boost through thermogenesis. 🍗

4. Drink water—some studies link it to a slight metabolic boost. 💧

5. Supplements—only as a last resort; they offer minimal help. 💊

Stay active and stay hydrated!

5. Suplementos—última opción; ofrecen poca ayuda. 💊

¡Mantente activo y bien hidratado!

(English version below)

English Version.

⚠️Which one have you tried? Do you follow any of these now?

🫵🏻It doesn’t matter what diet you follow if you’re going to choose the wrong things.

👉🏻Obviously, the pictures are exaggerations, I hope. But the point is that in every diet (our daily way of eating, not a fad diet), there are more nutritious foods and less nutritious foods. Regardless, it is up to you to pick the best ones.

👉🏻Not one diet is best for weight loss either. It always depends on how much of certain foods you eat.

👉🏻Intermittent fasting is not going to work if you consume 3,000 calories during the time that you eat.

😉This is why you can’t compare yourself to your friend who lost 30 pounds doing the cactus diet!

Prevent diabetes by changing your lifestyle‼️

We have talked about prediabetes on previous posts and how very common it is. Many people with prediabetes will go on to develop type 2 diabetes.

Often, we use metformin to help delay this process and prevent getting to diabetes. However, lifestyle intervention is a more powerful tool to prevent diabetes.

The most powerful lifestyle change is weight loss. Even losing 5-7% of your body weight, ideally body fat, is enough to achieve metabolic changes and improve your health. For many, this does not sound like a lot of weight, but it still provides multiple benefits.✅️

Nutrition is also super important, of course, and goes hand in hand with weight loss. ✅️

Exercise is strongly recommended as well. Guidelines say to do moderate-intensity exercise for at least 150 minutes per week (e.g., 30 minutes, 5 days a week). ✅️

I tell my patients not to focus so much on the total amount of exercise but in their personal progress. If you're able to get 10 minutes daily, even though you're not getting to the 150 minutes per week, you're still benefiting from it. It is not all or nothing. 💪

About 90% of people with type 1 diabetes don't have any family history of type 1 diabetes.

ℹ️ Many people assume that genetics is the biggest reason why people get type 1 diabetes. Although genes play a role, only about 10% have a family history of type 1 diabetes.

❕Other possible, but not well proven, in my opinion, risks may be viral illnesses and environmental factors.

Did sweets cause you to get diabetes?!

This is a question people often ask me:
"Why did I get diabetes if I don't drink soda or eat sweets?!"

Although diet does play a part in a healthy lifestyle and preventing diabetes, there are a lot of other risks that are involved.

Note: we're talking about type 2 diabetes, not type 1 or other diabetes types like MODY, both of which are due to unmodifiable risk factors.

Some risks for type 2 diabetes are:

Being overweight.
Sedentary lifestyle.
Having high blood pressure.
Having abnormal cholesterol or triglycerides.
Age.
Ethnicity.
Family history (genetics).
Having PCOS.
History of gestational diabetes.

There's people who eat a lot of sugar and don't ever develop diabetes (this doesn't mean they're necessarily healthy, though).

Regardless of how many risk factors you have, you should work on the things you can control/improve to lead a healthier life.

Lifestyle habits can significantly help prevent or delay diabetes.

Have they told you that your sugars are "borderline"?

Having "borderline" sugars is not ok!

Do not wait and watch!

These sugar levels still hurt your body.

1 out of every 3 people have diabetes in the United States. From all these millions of people, 5 to 10% will go on to develop diabetes every year.

That's a lot of people! Many could prevent the problems that come with high sugars.

Talk to your doctor and ask if you should get tested. The earlier you catch it, the earlier you can try to stop, manage, or even reverse it.

Although we don't really want a lot of these in our body, fat cells (adipocytes) have an endocrine (hormonal) role in our bodies.

Fat cells produce multiple hormones and proteins important to manage hunger, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and metabolism.

Leptin was one of the first hormones discovered. It helps regulate hunger.

Leptin deficiency results in uncontrolled hunger (I swear I have this! 😁).

Adiponectin was later found, which increases insulin sensitivity and reduces inflammation.

Then they found others, like chemerin and resistin, that increase inflammation and mediate insulin resistance, respectively.

Fat cells also help regulate testosterone and estradiol (a type of estrogen) as they contain the enzyme aromatase, which converts testosterone to estradiol. A reason why obesity lowers testosterone.

Although lowering body fat is generally good, it would be unhealthy to have too low of a body fat percentage.

Your prolactin level is high.
Does that mean you have a brain tumor?!

Prolactin is a hormone made by your pituitary gland.
Its best-known function is to help make breast milk.

If it is high, it can cause irregular periods, infertility, ni**le discharge, erectile dysfunction, low s*x drive, breast tenderness, and even symptoms of menopause.

The first thing many doctors think about and patients look up online is that it may be due to a tumor in the pituitary gland that makes too much prolactin.

However, more commonly, it may be caused by medications, stress, ni**le stimulation, s*x, exercise, kidney disease, liver disease, PCOS, eating disorders, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and others.

The degree of prolactin elevation is helpful to suspect one thing over another. Depending on the cause is how we would manage it.

If you get a high prolactin level in your blood, don't freak out. Go to an endocrinologist to investigate further.

Theres still a lot of people out there who don't know which foods are carbs, proteins, or fats.

Many of these people are battling diabetes or other conditions that may improve with adequate nutrition.

I often ask them to add protein to every meal and keep starchy foods to a quarter of their plate, depending on their situation.

They often seem puzzled after I tell them this. And I know only a few will feel comfortable asking what foods have protein, carbs, or fats, if they don't know.

But I believe there are more people who are afraid to ask because they don't want to sound like they're not smart or educated.

This is a mistake!
If you don't ask, you'll never improve.

You can also ask your doctor to refer you to a registered dietitian. They can spend more time educating than what most physicians can.

I'm reposting this from , which could be a good, short guide for some people.
