Thinking about bringing your parent home from assisted living or memory care for Christmas?
For many families, it can be a meaningful way to celebrate—but it does take a little planning.
Here are a few things to consider before you check them out for the day or overnight:
✔️ Safety first
• Ask the community about medications, mobility needs, and meal schedules
• Bring mobility aids, hearing aids, glasses, and labeled medications
• Plan transportation carefully (stairs, walkers, car height)
✔️ Keep expectations simple
• Short visits are often better than long days
• Stick to familiar routines as much as possible
• Build in quiet breaks away from noise and crowds
✔️ Watch for common challenges
• Fatigue or confusion in new environments
• Sundowning or increased anxiety in the evening
• Difficulty returning to the community after the visit
✔️ The benefit
When done thoughtfully, bringing your loved one home can create meaningful moments—familiar traditions, favorite foods, and time together that truly matters.
