Thinking about bringing your parent home from assisted living or memory care for Christmas?
For many families, it can be a meaningful way to celebrate—but it does take a little planning.

Here are a few things to consider before you check them out for the day or overnight:

✔️ Safety first
• Ask the community about medications, mobility needs, and meal schedules
• Bring mobility aids, hearing aids, glasses, and labeled medications
• Plan transportation carefully (stairs, walkers, car height)

✔️ Keep expectations simple
• Short visits are often better than long days
• Stick to familiar routines as much as possible
• Build in quiet breaks away from noise and crowds

✔️ Watch for common challenges
• Fatigue or confusion in new environments
• Sundowning or increased anxiety in the evening
• Difficulty returning to the community after the visit

✔️ The benefit
When done thoughtfully, bringing your loved one home can create meaningful moments—familiar traditions, favorite foods, and time together that truly matters.

If you’re unsure whether a home visit is a good idea—or how to plan it safely—we’re here to help!
Premier Senior Consultants offers free guidance to help families navigate these decisions with confidence.

Thanksgiving can look different when a loved one is in assisted living or memory care, especially if bringing them home isn’t an option.
Here are a few practical ways to make the day go smoothly and still feel meaningful:

🍂 1. Bring Thanksgiving to Them
Pack familiar scents and tastes — a favorite pie, pumpkin-scented lotion, or a fall-themed blanket. These small comforts go a long way.

💬 2. Keep Conversation Low-Pressure
Short, simple stories or photo albums can spark joy without overwhelming them.

🕊️ 3. Enjoy Mini Moments
Instead of long visits, shorter quality interactions often work best, especially for memory care residents.

📷 4. Incorporate a Calm Tradition
A relaxing playlist, a familiar prayer, or reading can give the day a grounding sense of routine.

💛 5. Focus on Presence, Not Perfection
Your visit doesn’t have to be big to be meaningful. Your time and attention are the gift.

We hope these ideas help your visit feel a little easier and more meaningful this Thanksgiving. And if questions come up along the way, Premier Senior Consultants is always here as a continuing resource for your family!

🚩 4 Holiday Red Flags to Watch For in Aging Parents

The holidays give us a rare chance to slow down, reconnect, and really observe how our parents are doing at home. As you spend more time together this Thanksgiving, here are four important red flags to keep an eye out for that may signal it’s time for extra support:

1️⃣ Decline in Home Task Management.
Unopened mail, unpaid bills, little to no food in the fridge, or a general inability to keep up with basic household tasks can be early signs that daily responsibilities are becoming too much.

2️⃣ Increased Difficulty With Mobility.
If you notice unsteady walking, new bruises, trouble getting in and out of chairs, or hesitancy on stairs, it may indicate a growing fall risk—one of the biggest safety concerns for older adults living alone.

3️⃣ Decline in Hygiene and Self-Care.
Hair unkempt, clothing mismatched, body odor, or signs of skipped grooming routines can indicate that personal care tasks are becoming challenging or overwhelming.

4️⃣ Increased Forgetfulness.
Missing appointments, repeating conversations, forgetting medications, or misplacing items frequently may be signs of cognitive changes that need attention.

Noticing one or more of these doesn’t automatically mean assisted living is required—but it does mean it’s time for a caring conversation and a closer look at safety.

If you notice any of these signs this holiday season, we’re here to help. Reach out for a free consultation, we’ll walk through your concerns together and help you feel confident about the next steps for your loved one.
