Breastfeeding has so many long-term positive outcomes! In regards to inequality, nursing can help parents in the workforce and financially by reducing unpaid time off, since breastmilk can help build children’s immunity. It can increase cognitive development in children, helping them into adulthood. In terms of benefitting the parent, breastfeeding can decrease a women’s chance of developing certain diseases later in life.
Investment in breastfeeding and breastfeeding support is imperative to addressing inequalities, and you can help by supporting our mission! Follow the link in our bio to donate and spread the word. Let’s close the gap and make lactation care accessible for all!

Sometimes new parents can be discouraged when breastfeeding/chestfeeding is not going as planned because it is “natural”. They might think, “Shouldn’t I know how to do this?”. Though breastfeeding/chestfeeding may be natural, it doesn’t mean you will know what to do right away! Your body responds to the pregnancy and birth and provides milk (in most cases). After that, skills need to be learned by both you and your child to understand the process of feeding. Boston Lactation Center can help by providing care from experienced IBCLCs to help with the learning process.

Unfortunately, some mothers are told to stop breastfeeding due to an upcoming surgery or medical procedure due to a lack of knowledge. Though there are some medications that are not compatible with breastfeeding/chestfeeding, many mothers can safely continue to nurse with a plan set in place. IBCLCs have an important role in the medical community to provide this type of support! The Lactation Center can help mothers understand their options and provide medication facts that may not have been presented to them before.

Becoming an IBCLC is a rigorous process that involves lots of education, professional training, and a comprehensive exam. IBCLC is the highest level of certification for a lactation consultant. Many individuals pursuing the IBCLC credential require mentors to attain the necessary clinical hours. Boston Lactation Center aims to provide a space to help aspiring IBCLCs achieve their dreams, allowing for the continuation of skilled lactation professionals to help families on their breastfeeding/chestfeeding journeys. Please visit us at https://www.bostonlactationcenter.org/ to learn more!

Please note that there are other credentials for lactation consultants such as Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS), Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), and Certified Lactation Educator (CLE). These all require some lactation-specific education, but none of them exceed 45 hours or require clinical experience. These individuals all play an important role in providing breastfeeding/chestfeeding support for families.
