Meet Jax, an eleven year old Labrador retriever with a special story.
Jax was adopted by his mom Kaili in 2017, since then he has overcome many obstacles.
A year after his adoption Jax was diagnosed with bilateral CCL tears and given pain medication. The medication made Jax very sick, which is unusual, so further investigation was done by the VRC Internal Medicine team. Liver and Kidney biopsies were then performed and revealed Jax’s Canine Copper Disease Diagnosis.
Two weeks after Jax’s biopsies, a bleeding vessel was located via ultrasound and Jax received a blood transfusion. His bleeding vessel was surgically repaired, but unfortunately a kidney needed to be removed a couple weeks later. Jax adjusted well to life with one kidney! Jax has undergone surgery two more times since, once for the removal of a Soft Tissue Sarcoma, and again for a toe amputation that was suspected to be cancerous.
In March of 2025 Jax was diagnosed with GOLPP & Megaesophagus. The radiographs at that time also indicated that Jax had a pulmonary nodule, this nodule has since grown but his other diagnoses rule out his eligibility for further treatment.
Though Jax’s list of trials and tribulations are long, he has never faltered in his positive, inspiring, and cheerful disposition. Jax befriends every animal and person he meets spreading smiles along the way, usually as he hops down the hallway looking for the next treat. There is nothing that Jax loves more than friends and food!
Recently Jax received a new brother, Grumps, who was adopted after needing care following a hit by car incident. The bond that Jax and Grumps share is beautiful and heartwarming. His gentle, patient, and sweet disposition make him the perfect big brother for Grumps.
Jax has touched the lives of many at VRC, as he has been involved with the Internal Medicine department, the Anesthesia and Surgery department, & occasionally the Emergency department when he gets into trouble. We are honored to be a part of Jax’s life, and to support him on his journey, he is a one-in-a-million dog! Here’s to Jax!!
